I do the same as rtb and twist the cables the "wrong" way before screwing in so they end up straight or with a slight twist when finished.
25 watt iron max, flux cored solder, IIRC I used 1mm^2, but the label has come off the reel. It's the size recommended for soldering ICs to PCBs. Clean & tinned bit.
You're also likely to flatten the insulation where the clamp is and, possibly expose the conductor, because heat transfer will soften it.
