Thoughts on Cut50??

[Mystery Machine]

I am thinking of buying a plasma cutter because I know that I'll be doing a LOT of cutting/chopping/fabbing once my new Potamig arrives (thanks Steve )

I'll be cutting quite a bit of thick metal (up to 10mm) when fabricating winch mounts, rock sliders etc...so the cutter needs to be able to handle a clean cut up the this thickness.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these machines?

If not, is there any sub-£500 plasma's that will clean cut 10mm?

Dunno about the cut 50, but that seller is obviously a welding specialist - every fabricator should have a Crazy Fit Massage Vibration Plate in his (or her) workshop!

By no means a no Mystery Machine. But a no from that seller, I reckon. If you can find a reputable supplier to sell you one, and (check the warranty), it will probably be worth it, as if it doesn't work, or goes wrong, you have a chance of getting the problem sorted. Rehmann, German ebay seller, sells similar made-in-china machines, and seems to have a good reputation when it comes to sorting problems.

I can't give you an opinion on the machines. They are probably fine, but when we get to the "what if"... you want a seller you can rely on.

At the risk of getting seriously singed here you probably won't go far wrong with 'Shop River' too if you're possibly looking to buy a chinese machine direct from China. His feedback is second to none on there and he even supplied a replacement part for a member's machine (which didn't come from him in the first place) for next-to-nothing.
Like Si says, Rehmann (Feltzen Group) seem to be pretty good at honouring their warranty's.

Is yours a cut40, cut50 or another model? (I can't see a cut50 listed in their items for sale)

Also - what sort of thickness have you managed with a clean cut?

Hi,

Mine's a Berlan 40 Amp and I've cut two 5mm plates back to back, about 10mm. It states that it'll cut up to 12mm.

I'm not sure about this 'clean cut' though...

depending on speed of travel the cut edge is straight-ish, ie, it doesn't wobble about much, but there is always a line of 'spatter' attached to the underside no matter what metal thickness or power setting.

So I wouldn't exactly call it 'clean' as it still needs some grinding before welding. Thicker pieces need more grinding as this line is a bit thicker.

I did try welding it once but there seems to be air or something inside and the resulting weld was poor.

Peter, there could be something wrong there. Clean cut should be just that, with no fettling required. We use a small Hypertherm in the works which leaves no spatter at all. The components go straight in to the weld shop and again, no problems.

Hey folks, I recently got a CUT 40 from an english seller on Eblag, allright so it didn't work straight out the box But... Email the seller, he had a good idea of what was wrong, 'send it back I'll fix it ' he says. Ok, £14 postage (to UK, NOT CHINA) and yes it took best part of three weeks to get the machine back, but Now it works, HA Ha!
I havent tried it on anything over 6mm yet but all i can say is Wow, this toy is goin to Very Useful....

btw turns out it was the torch hose had been blocked by bad assembly/swarf !

IMHO you could do a lot worse on Ebay, I suggest contacting my supplier,

Oh just a quick point, you'll need a 30 amp power to fully use a cut 50, 4.4kva rated supply, the 40 will run on an extension lead, 16 amp plugs / 3.1 kva.

So the thing doesn't work when you take it out of the box, it costs you to return it & it's 3 weeks before you get it back. Hardly great recommendation that is it!

Point was: IT WAS CHEAP! It came from an english supplier, who replaced the parts that didn't work, with out making a fuss. As a "Hobby" user of these things the delay in getting a working machine was not too much of a problem, if I needed it for work, well I'd have spent quite a bit more in the first place!!!!!

I just had to go check, its a cut40 sorry, and ive used it on some 8mm with fairly clean results. Ive not really had cause to cut 10mm like peter although no doubt it will do so.
I sliced through some 20mm once being an animal, and made multiple passes and angled the torch on the first couple of overpasses so the liquid metal blew away from me. Not pretty and not to be recommended, but it managed it.

The only thing I made a slight mistake on is I should have bought a 3 phase supply unit, as Im current barred to 18amp per phase but have 3 phase supply, so to use it for thick stuff I have to make sure all the stuff in the workshop that sits on the same phase is off. If the compressor kicks in while Im using it the disjoncter (its like a weird current limiter) trips after about 3 seconds, because I think the comp draws about 5amp per phase.
I bought a huge box of consumables from a seller on ebay as you quickly use up the few that come with the machines learning to make sure the air supply is on, Im still using them...
There have been a couple of occasions when it didnt "plasma" when the torch was pressed and I went cold the first time it happened because of all the naysayers going on about their reliability, but that turned out to be the little spike inside the torch worn too far down. Pop a new one in and its off we go.
Like I say, I like it, its saved my bacon a fair few times. The only real improvement I would want would be a genny + petrol compressor that can power it remote

Considering the amount of units coming out of China..........you don`t hear that many horror stories really. They are all copies of a well tried and proven design......
