Those moments a multitool comes into it's own

Thought I'd start a specific thread on this, for when we occasionally get that question: Is a multitool worth buying? Any use case situations &/or photo's are welcomed.

Today, I had one of those occasions, where it was the quickest & likely best tool for the task. Removed a door from the airing cupboard, & wanted to cut away the bottom stop lath.



Made it so easy to get a flush cut with minimal, if any, damage to surrounding woodwork.

They're ace. Bought a cheap one from Lidl. Wouldn't be without it when doing domestic jobs.

I got one about four years ago, I was repairing rotten wooden window frames and some places were too far gone to do with a die grinder and a tube of Dryflex. Haven't really use it much at all since, until a few weeks ago to carve the grout away on a tiled bath side to investigate a leak. Personally I don't think they're incredibly useful, but when you do need one, nothing else will do.

I needed to adjust the position of some radiator pipes in the floor as their original position was too close to the wall after boarding and plaster. A quick hole with a spade bit and seconds with the multi-tool to join the holes up without damaging the pipe. It would have been a laborious job with a hacksaw blade or similar…

use my chordless dewalt multitool virtualy everyday at work. cant be without it . cut socket boxes out and chases in plaster on solid walls back to the brick sharpen them up with an angle grinder using a 1.0mm slitting disk the teeth dont even need to be accurate get about 4 goes at each blade even though i get them for about less than a quid each

Tasks like that, they truly are indispensable.

I was aghast when my chippy mate suggested I borrow his for a job.

Wouldn't be without mine now, I have a few, both 230V and 18V.

I had a very fragile, 6" return, loose, with the plaster hollow. Needed to put a single socket in there. The multitool cut the Celcon blocks like a dream:

Multitool was actually the first power tool I ever bought yet at the same time, is the one I use the least. But, when you need your multitool, nothing else will do. Went with the Makita DTM52Z as it's brushless, but also Starlock.... Which is cool but the blades are too damn expensive.

You can occasionally drop on pattern ones on Ebay or Amazon. I generally order a few, when they appear.

had a chorded for years still got it then bought the 18 volt dewalt battery one and its far superior and versatile handy to use without pulling leads about and plugging in

Battery, is my opinion. You simply have more freedom, with battery. You're likely to use it in some awkward spots, at some point, (like the time I had to do contortion tricks in the kitchen cupboard, in extremely tight conditions, in order to cut out the old backboiler pipes for the fireplace), & getting snagged or hindered by a mains lead is counter-productive.
