Thin cutting discs with a sell by date

As for the use by dates, whether they are worth heeding or not, it sure is a great way of scaremongering people to go and spend out on new discs more often. Oh yeah, Im currently using a disc at work 4 years out of date, It hasnt nuked me yet

As I've never had any problems using discs over 3 years old and haven't heard about it being a serious problem, I'm not about to start chucking discs out either.

However, if you are employing people to use angle grinders or hiring out grinders or selling discs, the hassles involved with having someone injured by a disc which happened to be out of date might be such that you wouldn't want to risk it.

checked some at work today and some that were brought 4 months ago had 5/2012 on them but some bought today had 9/2013 on them

nowhere near 3 years so they are over halfway through their useable lifetime by the time you get them

personally think its designed to make you buy more discs

using discs that are 6 years out of date today

Was he wearing gloves when it happened? I've had discs disintegrate and never had any part of it go near the back of my hands but my gloves would have stopped any skin from being damaged.

If he'd trapped his glove between a grinding disk and the guard, things could have been MUCH worse.

You'll find that wearing gloves whilst using rotating machinery is a definite "no no"

I know the lads in our machine shop wear nitrile ones (machinists using lubricant, thin & will rip off in an instant) or the very thin cotton ones for handling sheet materials.

Better get onto Makita and SAIT for two then. Their angle grinder grinding and cutting discs both have a gloves symbol on, not a no gloves symbol. 3M and Flexovit are another couple.

Are you sure this isn't advice about using standing machinery, not hand held grinders?

Not sure about this advice. The reference are to operating lathes, drill presses etc, where you might get drawn into the spinning machinery. Grinders are different and I'd strongly suggest that wearing protective gloves while operating is correct. My workshop gloves have numerous scars on them from grinders, usually when they're spinning down, but without gloves I'd have scars.

Having read this thread, I'll ensure I also continue to wear eye protection. Most of the rest of my body can rough it.

Always wear gloves when using an angle grinder, but never wear gloves when using a drill press, lathe, Grinding wheel or any other machine that spins with alot of torque.



You'd need to be doing something seriously wrong to get your glove caught in an angle grinder, and even if you did I doubt that they've got enough torque to seriously damage your hand.

Just opened a fresh box of 100 cutting discs from right lines, some numbers/letters, but not a 'use by' date in sight.

Another advantage of wearing gloves with an angle grinder is that if you get too close to the wheel you can feel it through your glove before it grinds away at your skin.

I wear latex gloves when using my drill press, which will get ripped off rather than pull my hand into the machine.

as with all things common sense prevails .....but is sadly lacking for many.

there is one manufacturer of disks ( often on here)whose youtube link shows a thin disk grinding its way through a rather large piece of stainless scrap, the operator isn't wearing gloves nor does he appear to make the grinder safe while taking the disk out

in years of using angle grinders ive never had one fail on me, treat the thing with respect and you should be ok.

I have seen the aftermath of failed grinding stones on a large pedestal grinder, not nice, but the guy had been using the side of the stone not the face and in my opinion had been excerting to much pressure ( the same guy shattered a blade on a mech reciprocating saw by letting to much weight onto it).

inspect before use and use as designed for and you should be ok, hand position is important but sometimes we all take the easy option and hold the piece being cut with our left hand far to close to the disk rather than safely securing it.

i heard he was apparently taking the issue up with clarke but dont know how he will prove it wasnt misuse

they will test the faulty broken disks then test some from the same batch numbers . that will be easy to prove

theres always one brainbox aint there

could he still claim that on box was dropped by store staff or something

as much as i suspect that it was misuse i still think he may be successful after seeing what other people have had payments for

unless hese got a fat wallet and a good claims solicitor and pays an insurance against loosing the case in court and has to pay all the costs . take the gamble . my wifey was in an accident 3 years ago not her fault its costing 800 quid insurance we have to pay in case we loose the court case

the ones who deserve it have to fight to get it whereas the ones who do fa get it handed to them every time they trip over themselves
