first house at 21 was 1600's downstairs you could tell the beams were hand hewn with an adze,
wander upstairs you see pitsawn timbers
roof was put back on at a later date you can see the bandsaw marks

all of that sitting on a few bricks banged into the ground

as a traditionally trained cabinet maker it was errm exciting!

as the old timers say "worse thing that happened in construction was concrete"

Look at some of the 60s and 70s concrete monstrosities…..many haven't lasted 50 years for various reasons

1. Concrete does have its place. It does! It is the oversue and over spec that gets me

2. Real old buildings that have lasted the test of time I like... Love - "done it and been there" - maybe they were lucky to be errected on good ground and lasted - who knows....?

this particular job has ended up being a piled raft, the existing and all the existing just sit on standard footings.

i am sure the engineer has done it like this for good reason

This is what really gets my goat. I've been looking into building a garage recessed into a small 4m bank behind the house. Although there wouldn't be any planning issues it would fall under building control so to cover my backside I thought I'd get a proper design done for the walls and slab. The main issue being keeping it dry from groundwater rather than structural.

Bloody thing has more steel and concrete then the rest of the property*. Didn't even bother coming out to assess the ground conditions so I assume he based it on building it on the beach because despite being shale once we went through the initial two feet near the surface the 13 tonner doing the dig had to switch over to a ripper tooth to loosen the ground.

* foundations that he specced were over a foot deep and over a metre wide with 16mm mesh everywhere. If that was required then how come the 600sqm 10 bed mansion 15ft away has survived for over 200 years on no foundations other than 4" pieces of slate. The back bit which was servants quarters is basically built out of crap and rubble ffs. Only the front portion has decent stone and even then its not that good.

House we once had was built in 1770, knew that as the date was carved into the beams here and there in hidden places.

No foundations at all, just a frame of timber baulks, 14 inches by 10. They were rotting though, and the house is still standing. New owners even got a hefty mortgage on it. Often wonder what the surveyors report said.

Also had a water mill in Cumbria. Been there since the 1400s. Just built on large boulders. The rest was stone and lime mortar.

Before the end of the 1800s, most buildings were brick, direct to subsoil, flared out to give a larger footprint.

All these modern regs and building methods make me laugh, as none of the carp they are putting up now is likely to still be there in a 100 years time. If that.

Yes and no, we have to consider that our viewpoint is skewed by the fact that the standing ones are lucky survivors plenty of rubbish has collapsed.

same for something still standing in 100 years, the lucky or special will survive, and to be honest so will most of our housing just continually renovated
