Manufacturing a new engine on an automated line is a whole different proposition to receiving, cleaning, stripping, measuring, reworking, building and testing an old engine - for one it's labour intensive on such a comparatively small scale - and TBH, it's a sellers market. £2.5k isn't that bad - not a cost I'd want but I can see that being financially invested in the vehicle means there's little option but to keep spending.

Yes but what if you have the means and measuring equipment to do it yourself, other than getting some machining work done, a few hundred quid to get the machining work done.

Because companies are run by number crunching accountants, and they dont do fixing stuff, so why should anyone else!
That's pretty much it, there are lots of spreadsheets involved in engine design & calibration, most of which are % of likely failures in <3 years for components or assemblies, if that is less than 7, then the costs and quality gets revised until it's just below 7. That is the threshold, I don't know why, but it is. If, say an EGR valve starts to fail at greater than 7%, then the manufacturer of it becomes liable (and generally a sh!tshow is triggered) at which point it becomes an 'emerging concern' where the accountants demand answers from the QA's and a 'six sigma' team is
Its a massive battle to get them to honor that despite it being in the extended warantee period. You have to first get written approval from the in country office to get it inspected at a merc dealership to make the claim valid, and then if they agree its deteriorated to the point its about to fail and kill you, they may authorise its replacement under the still operational warantee.
Those two words should NOT be in the same sentence!
I bet Ford second hand car values have dropped massively since the Eco boost fiasco came out, this then affects what the second / third hand owners are willing to pay for a car thus causing a drop in second hand car value for the first buyer.
Vehicle manufacturers are stipulating service intervals for engines which will get them over the warranty period, they know it’s well in excess of what’s required for longevity.
But for a few decades now they’re in competition with each other to keep those intervals expanded in order to keep them ahead of the competition.
By doing so it makes their vehicles “cheaper” to maintain over a period of time for the people purchasing these vehicles.
That’s all fine and good for the first and maybe second owner but it’s increasingly the case that engines are failing at a mileage for owners whereby the warranty is finished, and their shiny car with a full dealer service history is having catastrophic engine problems.
I genuinely feel for these people, I change my oil and filter every 5000 miles, I’m fortunate that I have mechanical knowledge.
90% of the modern population just don’t, and think that the manufacturers advice of an 18,000 mile oil change is OK
Try telling them on a car forum that a full dealer service history is fundamentally flawed and you’ll be shot down in flames, I try but it’s not my problem, my cars are serviced by me at my service intervals and they are all the better for it.
Even though my cars will be worth less at the time of sale because it doesn’t have that cosseted gold leafed, signed dealer stamp.
Because let’s face it main dealer mechanics have way way more knowledge, and any mechanic who doesn’t work for a main dealer is OBVIOUSLY cutting major corners hahaha

Well that’s another very distant world to the one most of us live in.
This is actually very short sighted, as if the second hand value drops alarmingly, the dealers get reluctant to take them on trade in, which then affects new sales. When I worked at masses, there was a problem on some tractors with a 64 speed gear box that frequently went wrong and was a mare to work on, read expensive. They brought out a conversion to 32 speed with a service exchange gearbox at reasonable cost, dealers were then much happier taking them on trade in, knowing that a, they could be fixed up at a reasonable cost, and b, once fixed they would have a decent resale value. Sales of the next generation picked up as a result.
Send it back claiming it is not of merchantable value or quality as it has failed within a week of getting it brand new from them . Is it possible to threaten them with trading standards people if they don't cough up and offer you compensation . Can you up the anti on face book and you tube on your behalf as I'm sure they will hate the bad publicity .
Keep Scotland seeking independence , if that how you motor trade people run their business . At all costs please keep them away from the rest of the UK .
64 speed gearboxes, jeez, things have moved far since I was a farmers son in the 80’s, there were 4 high and 4 low then, on the old Massay Fergussons we had.

As you mentioned that, I don’t have any socials, but you tube, that’s possibly an option, I do have a you tube channel just never used it, my 12 year old son started it and would love to be an editor, I’ll keep that in mind
Some of them are full vario now and have been for twenty years. It was a sixteen speed box, with four clutchless ranges in between, so you could just push a button to go a bit quicker or slower. It was so you could always get the best most productive speed. A third of a mile per hour difference when you're ploughing will make a big difference to how many acres you knock over in a day, and you can't change gear using the clutch when you're pulling a plough because it will stop dead as you as you press it down.
That makes sense, we had 2 furrows back then, all changed days now!
Lots of vehicles do 'OK' on extended service intervals - which is why I mentioned the drive cycle parameters, if a vehicle is regularly driven on short, low temperature, low effort journeys (i.e. typical local commute/school runs) then that is generally outside of the scope of extended servicing - but most drivers/owners read the headline 'extended servicing' and think it applies to them, all the time.
