I'll need to fit my front & rear dash cam to the new car. Any precautions? Is it just wire into / piggyback off a fuse like on a "normal" car?

Yes.
Unless you want it high powered, in which case aim for one of the big orange wires

Pretty much, the vehicle 'internals' still run on 12VDC - just be aware that the 12V battery is not rated for 'starting' duties so if you want parking mode, you might need an intermediate dashcam battery pack.

If there's "intellectual property" for ignition systems & emissions systems... then (apart from the fact that there are a lot of businesses capable of producing those already) I can see that.

However.... when coded systems are embedded & interlinked into things which can function absolutely perfectly without electronic systems & have in effect been complicated for the very purpose of utilising electronic Gatekeepers to lock out anyone but Mfr Appointed Agents (coding Batteries, Handbrake Systems and so much more)......

You don't need 'coded access' for most things, it's only making changes - and replacing emissions system related components, for which you can thank our lord & masters, the EU and the UN - they don't believe you should be able to work on emissions systems as you might 'cheat'....
Each manufacturers supplier holds the IPR for their components and the operating software, increasingly protected thanks to 'zee Germanz' obfuscating the true intent of their emissions control software.
No-one bats an eye at having to get keys 'coded to the car' (it's actually the other way around) either by a dealer or a locksmith - who generally use a 'pay per use' third party software application. So why do people get all bent out of shape about ADAS calibration, emissions related work, safety/SRS related work and HV work? in all those cases, you can leave the vehicle in a potentially dangerous condition or outside of it's type approval, meaning that the vehicles insurance may be voided - relying on yours in the event of an incident. If it's your own vehicle, then you're unlikely to have the appropriate insurance in place. In those terms, is it really worth the principle of 'not paying the man'?

There are a lot more changes coming - initially around security systems then updating software or programming replacement modules. In the main, to reduce the amount of people 'coding out' various systems or subsets due to defects or 'just because' - SCR, EGR, ABS, SRS are the ones that come to mind with ADAS & Telematics being likely targets for 'mapping out'.
How would you feel if you bought a used vehicle only to find out in a collision that the SRS had been disabled due to a minor fault that the previous owner decided was too much bother to get fixed and paid some bloke in a transit £50 to 'map it out'?

I'm currently working on vehicles that have various things disabled from the factory.
Emission faults don't cause reduced power, speed recognition doesn't beep/flash, and although collision avoidance is fitted and will flag up faults, it won't intervene and brake.

I do wonder what happens when these vehicles get sold, because AFAIK they simply get critical kit removed and sent straight to auction, unless there is some deal with the auction/manufacturer where they program them back to standard vehicles prior to sale.

The latest cars come with the speed recognition fully working, and via the powers of remote updates, it miraculously disables itself after a week or so, I'm guessing once the manufacturer has been told the cars actual use (they get bought in batches, with some being converted for rapid response, and the rest more generic organisational duties where all the safety systems remain enabled).

When I worked with safety PLC's you had to attend a short course and were issued with a unique password that you used to make any changes which were logged against that password so it was traceable.

If you could buy a kit, would you ?

Simple press braked sheets, laser cut pieces, steel box tube frame.

I've been thinking of 1/8" thick aluminum diamond plate, maybe rivets like a UPS truck,
maybe welded.
Premade wiring harness's, simple drives, simple motors, easy access batteries.
Modular everywhere.
"Failure is not an option" design philosophy.

Similar to the slate truck, only more industrial.
Very much basic, functional.

Most people probably not.

I was skeptical of long service intervals but iam now a convert. In 2016 I got a new citroen relay van and it had 30,000 intervals, I serviced it myself from new using the correct oil at 30,000 miles I ran it for 8 years and 176,000 miles and it was still running perfectly and using no oil between services. I replaced it with the vauxhall version of the same van and the service intervals have increased to 32,000 miles so that's what this will be done at.

I just could not bring myself to do them intervals on a small diesel!

We do 50k (31000 miles) intervals on the trucks at work, but they hold 48 litres and I reckon have an easy life.
One maker Daf have service intervals of up to 200k, their engines are renowned worldwide as being utter crap! So bad is their rep that their residual value at 8/10yrs old is 2/2.5 k for a truck that cost over 100k new.

Out of all of my cars - my estate car - wifeys car - few loaner cars. None do more than 8k a year - some do as low at 3k a year.

I just change the oil once a year - whatever the mileage.

200000 km - 124000 miles on one charge of oil. Unreal....

When I took my Dodge for the IVA test, there was a guy on yet another visit for a test, trying to get his van legal - bought from the MOD without realising all the stuff not fitted/disabled etc.

Yeah, I would consider it. An ebike upgrade kit is a wonderous and relatively cheap thing. But the car equivalent....££$$!

I just looked up an EV classic VW beetle conversion from a company in the UK. Prices start at £45000.

Still seems a really niche thing to do.
