I tend to stick to cheap new cars as I live in London! I keep them maybe 3-5 years...buy them out of the PCP if they're worth more than the buyout cost.
Running older cars is ok if you have the time so the value equation works in your favour....or you have 2 or 3 cars and can switch (I've done that too in the past).

It really is a very expensive way to not own a car. And once the term is up most will get another one and restart the cycle.

Makes my ULEZ compliant 2008 Fiesta that I bought for 750 quid sound like a much better idea to me.
The increasing problem ref "bangernomics" is just how complex, expensive to repair and less reliable so much of the newer stuff is IMO..... so while a used vehicle gas always been a gamble - the stakes are getting so high, & the odds so long ........

I had to get rid of my lovely 2003 V70 d5 because of ULEZ....£12.50 per day...drive every day and that's £4.5k a year in charges!

I bought a BMW 520D at 6 years old in 2012 for 7k with 70k miles on the clock. Sold it to my sister for 5.5k in 2016 with 99k miles on it. Bought it back from her in 2023 for £1600 with 137k miles on it. It's now a few miles short of 160k miles and having survived a drowning last December will hopefully go on to 250k miles plus. It has all the luxury of any modern car. Is capable of easily cruising faster than you should, quiet and returns 45mpg. It's cheap to service and easy to work on. It's cost me about £3100 over the six years it's been in my hands and so far only needed oil changes etc, brakes and tyres.

I could buy the car without issue but I don’t think it’s sensible to buy such a depreciating asset my money is invested more sensibly.
My other cars are bought outright after someone else took the big depreciation hit.
The one and only reason I got this is because HMRC are paying 50% of the monthly payments in a roundabout way, if they weren’t I wouldn’t have it. It’s costing me personally a lot less than the £7K per year you mentioned I couldn’t justify that, includes everything, tyres, tax, maintenance.

And that's the reason people do it, fixed monthly payments for everything but fuel (or electric), then swap it for another once the warranty is coming to an end.
Easy to budget for, no hidden costs (unless you trash it, in which case a local 'smart repairer' will make it look good enough to hand back) I can see the attraction but as the owner of two large dogs and our liking for travelling to less inhabited bits of Scandinavia for a bit of wild camping or a bit of offroading in North Africa, we're not really going to get anything suitable in potential budget range.

We buy ours outright, ones an l200 ( business) just about to come out of warranty at 5 years old, the other Rav 4 bought 18 months old with 8k on it. Both probably ok for anther 5 years without too much investment. Though we have discussed one motor, but what to buy, must tow at least 3 ton.

Ex Motability cars that have had some sort of modification for a disable person can be purchased with the help of the disabled driver who either is not allowed to drive any more or who is gving it back after the three year hire.. Our Outlander PHEV ( 15 plate now with 46 k miles ) cost us less than half price .
Tonight Alison checked with an on line buying company and has been offered £6200.
It was recalled by the government due to the ACOS debacle telling lies about peoples levels of disabilities , so I lost it with less than 13 K on the clock .
Alison asked Motability if she could buy it , " Yes certainly for about £13 k " , we got a car that both of us drove from new , though I wasn't able to drive it as my injuries have got worse.
Seven or so months after having it withdrawn , my appeal was heard and I was granted full pip indefinitely with a full back payment .
I was contacted by Motability and issued with a brand new fully adapted for me Berlingo E at zero deposit and no cost for the adaptations for the full mobility element of my PIP & and being a higher bigger better adapted vehicle I can use it with ease and my new power chair fits in it a lot better than it did in the Outlander .
