I've got a handful of cutters, one collet and a chuck and an edge finder , that's how I squared the vice , need to get an indicator set so I can tramm the head , I'm enjoying the learning process thoughThis is the problem with this forum.
You ask a question, you have ten different responses, which all seem sain.
Then people start critiquing each others replies, and it all get lost / confusing / losing the initial point.
Yep, I'm in the same boat as you.
Any lubricant is better than none, I sling 15/40 over my mill and lathe as that is what's abundant.
May not be the best, but hey.
I'll be shot down imminently by the pros, but I'm an amateur.
I had issues tramming the head, and my vice bed seems to not be level, but I've had some success with it, I've broken two milling cutters so far, probably as they were blunt, and I'm an inexperienced numptie learner.
I've not really had time honestly, been stupid busy with 'life'.
Etc.
Problem is it's another tool, rabbit hole.I've got a handful of cutters, one collet and a chuck and an edge finder , that's how I squared the vice , need to get an indicator set so I can tramm the head , I'm enjoying the learning process though
dont worry, things will be better in the morningFinal word before bed, it's great learning new skills, and maybe one day I'll be competent to use it properly.
But the old expression, the journey is more important than the destination...
Maybe I just made that up, but I love learning new skills.
I may talk a load of twaddle, but I've learnt so much from this forum.
Equally I blame this forum, for helping me expand my tool buying-ness.
I have no idea what is wrong with you combi boiler, any leaks on the hot side was my first thoughts.dont worry, things will be better in the morning
Really ?dont worry, things will be better in the morning
no leaks Mat just low pressure...Why is it you and i cant sleep when its bedtime around hereI have no idea what is wrong with you combi boiler, any leaks on the hot side was my first thoughts.
A new brake disc and a dial indicator is a good way to tramm the head, sure mr Doubleboost did a video.I've got a handful of cutters, one collet and a chuck and an edge finder , that's how I squared the vice , need to get an indicator set so I can tramm the head , I'm enjoying the learning process though
...need to get an indicator set so I can tram the head...
It is the right way to do it and the quickest way to do it, but you can achieve a lot with cheap (no tools). The indicator is just a precise way of measuring small distances.
Disconnect the power to the mill. Put a round thing in a collet. Clamp an F-clamp onto the round thing so its bar is horizontal. Clamp something vertical to the outboard end of the F-clamp and rotate the spindle until that vertical thing is on the left of the table. Raise the knee until you can just slide a fag paper between the vertical thing and the table surface. Rotate the spindle 180 degrees so the vertical thing is now on the right. If the whole packet of ciggies now fits under the end of the vertical rod, there is a problem with the tram. If two fag papers fit, the tram is good enough.
There is a Keith Fenner video called "no stinkin' indicators" that illustrates setting up a four jaw chuck using just a pointer. Tools are often something that you exchange money for in order to save time. There are many ways to peel a cat.
