Yes it appears this may well be the go, I will admit I planned this poorly, but better to revise than to ‘realise’ at the last minute!

Everyone at work reckons it needs a trailer. This is ok, I have access to a trailer, and I can drive perfectly happily with one. It’s just a bit of a pain since it limits speed to 90km/h, ten under the limit - no ‘making time’ for me

Nice to see others with these drills. One day of work and then we go.

How are you going to lift it? They are really heavy and tall and our little Ford 1900 struggles. See if there is a farmer with a tractor or forklift. You can borrow my engine crane if you want. Pick it up on the way through. I PMed you my details. Geoff

Nice drill but the thing that worries me is that you want to spend a day in a car with your sister!
Maybe things work differently down there....

The guy apparently has an engine crane and lots of tools - I spotted a Bridgeport and a beautiful Adcock and Shipley mill in his photo background!

That is a thing of pure beauty. I was thinking grey for mine with red lettering, but can totally appreciate the full gloss red treatment!

id adapt a tensioner ( mower roller ) onto the inside of the belt just to get a little longer before cutting and rejoining pieces again

I think the belts have a pin which you can pull on the joint.

With flat belts without tensioners, the only way to take up stretch, (and they will stretch) is to cut and resplice, making an adjuster is a very good idea!

to tension that type of belt id use middle of column and use a bar coming out from a clip on and lock clamp

then id use 2 lawnmower rollers fastened to a twist frame that would allow a good tension on a twist at any setting of the machine belts

it needs to be variable due to movement of the belts

Love these threads... As one who only has a couple of Meddings Drilltru's, I am in awe of some one driving quite a few miles/km to collect an elegant antique like that, then restore it...But then a pleasure to use.

As for a road trip with one's sister. I get on quite well with mine and we would straighten out a lot of familly history on such a trip. 900 odd is not such a big trip. I have done 2K km in europe non stop a few times in the past, but not now., no need and too many camaras. I understand that the OP is young and fresh licence, so a bit more reticent. Trailer a VERY good idea with that lump.

I have a Denbigh like that, I bought it sight unseen, had it shipped to France, from Scotland, Changed the belts, it's been used pretty regularly for the last ten years! Mine has a flat belt where yours has V belts, I didn't change that belt when I bought it, now it needs changing! I frequently use a 50mm bit wit a a morse 3 to 4 adapter! It's a pity it didn't have a 4 morse taper to start with!

I think I should warn you that they are very top heavy so it will be very difficult to lift it safely with an engine crane. If you drop the table to the bottom & add some ballast like a sandbag or 2 you might get it lifted but you really need to lift it from the top of the drill.

Ask the seller if there's a local farmer with a loader or a forklift available, it will make things so much easier. Unless you've seen one of these drills in real life you will not realise how tall & heavy they really are!
