Well, when I was running up and down the land on various Japanese and German bikes, the vast majority of the time they were sitting in their comfort zone, for hours on end. The only one that popped its clogs was the BMW R80 that I'd put R100 barrels on, but missed out on upgrading the oil pump or should have pulled the crankcase apart as part of the upgrade. So, I don't count its failure against it, as it happened when I was racing a twit in a hot hatch.Just had a thought ,perhaps one reason for the Japanese reliability is that they very rarely get driven hard unlike the British bikes which were forever ridden " harry flatters " to get anywhere at all.
On the other hand, there have been plenty of times when I've gunned the living ***** out of my GS Suzukis and have yet to suffer any mechanical failure attributal to that.
That was more of a 70s thing. From the late 70s things improved mightily.Japanese handling made sure of that.....
