Yep replaced the battery on my car a few weeks ago.
Bloody battery clamp was seized solid.
I Had to chisel a chunk out the old battery to get it off.
Won’t happen again though… new battery is held on with a ratchet strap… job done!

Out of interest did you test the replacement battery with the topdon??
I have a similar tester checked my 2011 plate skoda May be original showed 90% health but I've seen new ones less than that.
If you retest same battery it gives similar results each time.
My 100ah 950 amp crank battery shows 30 % but starts the 1.9 diesel fine often running 80 amps of heater plugs

Mine's on the way out, too. I wanted to wait until after my MOT rather than buy one before, in case it failed on something massive that wasn't worth repairing. It hasn't, though, so now I've got to fork out.

Yes it was 100% it had 880 odd CCA actually so over the stated rating which is typical of a genuine / quality new battery IMO.
I have bought new AGM and Calcium car batteries from ebay as cheaper options and they were about 90% or less new out of box. They never met the full stated rating.

When I lived in the far east you could not buy a battery with more than a 20 month warranty, even the best brands. A very odd number that, but it was rare to never that a battery lasted more than two years in the heat over there.
I assume they calculated the 20 month number so they didn't have so many claims.....
But back in Englandshire every battery comes with 5 years guarantee or more.

Very timely thread Joepro, just this morning on the way to work in my Vw T5.1 van the battery light came on!
I checked it and its only 11v, the worrying thing is it is still 11v when running and rev'ed. I've gone and bought a new battery and am really hoping it's not the alternator.
The van is a 2010 and this is the original battery!! (I have had for 11 years, so I wouldn't have thought its was changed before I hab it)
Before this van I had 2001 Passat that I sold at 12 years old and that had the original battery on so these VW factory batteries are pretty good!

I actually have one of thee very old Durite load testers and some of my " retired" batteries still hold good (>9v )after 20 to 30 seconds and a pretty red element.
As an electronics guy I expect the electronic testers are maybe thrown by gas on plates etc. I usually charge then leave 24 hours to settle.
Original equipment batteries seem to look same as an aftermarket Varta/ Bosh and have " 4 year warranty" on but seem to last much longer!

My BMW bike had a new battery last winter, and a few weeks ago the charge light stayed on after i'd fired it up. I shut it down, as it was quite late and it was a bit loud, and next day got my voltmeter out to see what was going on.
13.8v on the battery before I started it.
13.8v when it was running.
13.8v when it was revved up quite a bit.
Hmmmmmm....
But apparently quite normal for this bike, according to learned people on the BM forum, as it has a car style belt driven alternator. The charge light went off straight away when I fired it up the next day too, so it may have been an rpm thing the night before.

The Surf wouldn't start this morning when the wife had to use it on the school run, lots of swearing, huffing and puffing ensued
I had taken her car for a job interview as the Surf is a Sadiq Khan hater and didn't want to dirty it's tyres going into London

I find in winter, short runs to work and back in the dark, with everything lights, heated seats, wing mirrors etc, it either needs a good run, or a battery charger help intermittently, when the batteries feable, especially when it's well cold and the battery is getting old.

Mine's been OK for the last couple of days, as it's been a bit warmer here, but I'm also only doing short journeys, though I often do a bit of a detour just to get the temperature gauge up to the centre. Halfords price with trade card, £93-odd, or Euro Car Parts for £62.
