I was talking to a guy who’s dad worked on early spits and he said the first were made with flat heads but in production they would have domed heads and the extra drag lost them up to 15mph....and to replicate the domes heads on the early spits they stuck half of a dried pea to the flat rivets how brilliant is thatReminds me of a TV programme decades ago (I think it was presented by Raymond Baxter), describing experiments with false rivet heads being stuck on the outside of a Spitfire. Apparently the original design had all flush rivets to give a smooth surface, but they wanted to simplify manufacture by using normal domed rivets wherever possible. Test flights were made with various configurations of false-headed rivets until they found an arrangement that would cut costs by using as many domed rivets as possible, with only marginal reduction in performance.
