Sorry about the lack of updates, Spent the last week rebuilding the Z in the hope of a successful MOT. (I think the sunny weather went to my head) Bad idea I'm afraid. Tester blew a major brake line during test, (fluid everywhere!!) emissions went through the roof and to top it all, 2 rear bushes had failed causing wheel movement.
Brake lines go over the back axle, so rear sub-frame out. arrrhhhhhhh.
Still, back to welding.

Thanks Katbloke, I'll be back very soon. I have been so busy replacing all the rear brake lines in the slim hope to pass the MOT in time for summer. Anyone interested in some pictures? I know it's not welding but sure has been a challenge. Should be good reference for others.

It took me the best part of 4 days to get the rear axle and sub frame out. looking at it now, (knowing what I do now) should I have to remove it all again, it would probably only take 2 days at most.
I must admit, at first glance once everything was removed, it all looked a bit daunting. But once I had made sure the car was really safe to work under, i set about removing the brake lines bit by bit.
Hopefully, over the next day or so I will be in a position to pressure test, fingers crossed.

You are correct Keith19, I was advised that this type of pipe material would be the one to go with. I do not know much about it myself, so I hope I was well advised?

Hy redwine, great thread, I've been checking it for new posts daily for a long time now. It's even more interesting to me becouse I'm in the middle of something very simmilar to this, nissan sylvia rs 13.

Little bit of advice: if that moisture around damaged pipes is brake fluid, and I suspect it is, MAKE SURE that you remove it and use ANY MEANS NECESSARY!!! Brake fluid damages paint and if you dont remove it, some time soon you're gonna have a loooooooooot of rust everywhere nearby. And clean it like your life depends on it, if any of oil stays on surface, it's gonna interfere with fresh paint and give you more headache.

Hi Redwine,

Yes, Kunifer pipe is excellent stuff. Some of the classics I used it on locally are still running with it in place after 20 + years. Only problem I ever found with it was it doesn't like reworking, it gets work-hardened easily, so best take your time with it and try to get it right first time.

Glad to hear you have been enjoying my thread Chooowie, I take your point about cleaning off all the brake fluid, Fortunately, most of the moisture is from release agent, i sprayed all the rusted nuts etc' prior to removal. never the less, as you say, i will still give the area a good clean.

Hi Keith19, luckily, I only had to re work a couple of bends, and as you say, I did find it more difficult to manipulate second time around. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Sphinx, As for the surface rust, good point, My aim is to clean off all the loose rust and spray with Dynax s-50 for the time being, I am intending to remove all the rear axle etc' again through the winter, but for now, I am hoping to get her road worthy for the summer.

Managed to finish off the brake lines recently and early pressure tests look good, no leaks!!

I have spent the last couple of weeks replacing suspension bushes etc'
Did manage to get my first couple of coats of Dynax onto the new brake lines mind,
not a lot to show at the moment but hope to re build the sub frame and install it along with fuel tank soon.
On a more positive note, I have spotted some more areas of the dreaded tin worm that will need some attention, so I will be tackling them soon.

Looking good though. Still reeling at what you have achieved, being a complete novice when you started.

Just realised I haven't commented on your thread for quite a while ,great job !...no excuses about lack of equipement ,just a determination to do a good job ...well done ,it amazing what you can do with a cheap welder and the right technique ....keep up the good work

Thanks Guy's for your continued interest,
I apologise for my lack of activity, I have just been so busy getting her through the dreaded MOT I lost track of time. Mind you, she did pass in the end and has made all the effort worth while.
So for you folk that are just starting a project, believe me, when it is done it feels great.
That said, once the summer fades I have a long list of areas that need more fabrication and mig welding so will be back real soon. I have took the liberty of adding a few photos of her to date.
I hope you like them.
