Testing Coil Pack

It's a Peugeot TU engine, the headgasket is probably leaking on the front right corner by the oilway, it's closing up when it warms up a bit. Or occasionally the inlet manifold gasket does the same thing (especially the coolant heated ones) - what did the plugs look like?

it's not OBD2 compatible, you need PP2000, the dealer software.

edit: Also sweep the throttle position sensor with a multimeter - they often wear the tracks through just off idle.

Yet to do a compression test.

The head gasket was changed Dec 2019 along with timing belt etc. This was the head & gasket when it first came off. Not sure if this is telling in any way.

Tbh I now think the head should have been skimmed...it wasn't. Just rubbed on a flat plate against a sheet of emery and checked with a straight edge. Standard, new gasket fitted as opposed to the thicker one if you have the head skimmed.

The coolant system was flushed repeatedly along with a new water pump, radiator heater matrix. The coolant looks "rusty" but not oily.

Back then I did do this leakage test at the expansion bottle. Video:

Probably should have been skimmed they're a swine for warping on these. Oil doesn't typically get into the coolant when they go, they split where the triangular seal is around the oil passage you see there on the osf cylinder. Then it weeps into the cylinder, or out of the front of the block.

You're usually fine without the repair gasket with a skim anyway, there's loads of room on the 8v's - I had over 1mm skimmed off mine to bring the compression up to 10.4 on the stock gasket

You got a breakers yard near by?
If so go there and run up a 1.4 tu,
If running nicely pull off the whole fuel rail and the 4 injectors.

Tonight, when cold, before starting, I released the (genuine Peugeot) cap and felt the pressure release.

The coolant is more discoloured by rust than really rusty. Hard to photograph but you can see down into it. Definitely no oil in there.

Started her up and left it to idle.

After 10 mins temperature at 65degC on the gauge. Fan not on. Top hose cold.

About 12 minutes top hose getting warm. Fan still off. Temp at 70degC.

Just sitting here watching and waiting!

21 mins in. Since turning the key I've not revved it. Engine pitch suddenly changed and idle sounds less lumpy. Fan off. Temp still at 70degC. Top hose nice and warm which is handy as it's bloody freezing out here!

Fan came on when the temperature got to circa 90degC. Took about 45 mins to get there just leaving it sat idling, didn't rev it once.

Freezing cold and I did have the bonnet open. Shut the bonnet and it went up a bit quicker.

id borrow a decent one the cheapy ones are ok for testing compression between cylinders so you know
cyl 1 is 90
cyl 2 is 88
cyl 3 is 65
cyl 4 is 85

they will show if a cylinder is down but unless its a quality one the numbers may not be exact

eg if using the screw in bit showed on a engine is 70 but use the push fit of the same set with the same meter showed 95

For whatever reason that engine is running different mixtures across the cylinders.

I would say that will show any problems compression wise, you just want to know if all the cylinders are approx the same or one / two are low.
