My son in law has a four door four wheel drive Tesla, 0 to 60mph in three seconds, with a range of up to 300 miles depending on driving style , its got an enormous screen in the centre of the dashboard, Never driven it but it goes like sh@t off a stick!!

If you buy a 80KwHr tesla you actually get a slightly larger battery pack which helps with managing the battery as if a cell goes down the battery management just stops using that cell

A wee bit of hacking has discovered the charger in the model 3 can also be an inverter so it can take power from your battery and turn it into AC power

A tesla is also always connected to the net via the mobile phone network


SO

tesla have a built a large fleet of batteries that are constantly connected to the internet via the mobile network and spend a large amount of their time plugged into the mains grid

so in theory tesla could at times of peak demand take a few % out of everyones battery to top up the mains grid

Which if it is true might be exceedingly useful


Also

Octopus energy have had negative electricity prices here in the Uk during the day as we have loads of wind and sun with sod all demand

So they are paying you to use electricity during the day

if you had a large battery with an inverter and a computer connected to it there is no reason why you couldn't fill it up during the day and then feed it back into the grid of a evening when there is more demand

If you find out how much each battery discharge and recharge cycle costs in maintenance and end cost.

Then if profitable feedback to grid at peak time when higher price per watt, Which I believe some diesel generators are used for at the moment.

The other thing to take into account with EV cars, is that 62% of the houses in this country would be unable to get a car near enough to the house to charge it, so in theory in about 30 years time when petrol and diesel cars no longer exist the houses will be unsaleable, unless the streets are full of charging stations, which because most households have 2 cars would mean each car would need a designated parking space, and in reality most places would not have the room.
So although EV cars seem like a good idea, they will themselves cause major problems to the environment, and may well mean that the green belt would have to be sacrificed, to allow all new build homes to have the room to accommodate multi car ownership.
This is beside the fact that we would be unable to provide the electricity to charge every-ones vehicle, unless a plethora of Nuclear power Stations are built.

Long term, I think hydrogen fuel cells will be the solution, unless there is some major breakthrough in battery technology.

Hydrogen can be produced and stored locally, excess energy can be used to produce it, it solves the range/charging issues, it means you don't need a heavy battery, and it'll need far less infrastructure upgrades than if everybody needs to charge their car.

I wonder if the sales of Tesla's will take a big hit due to the long term affects of this covid situation? Other expensive/high end car manufacturers will suffer too so I can't see them escaping but who knows??

Had a pillock in a Tesla overtake me the other day, on a blind curve on a country lane. I know it's childish, but I had a smug look on my mush when I was smack behind him at a roundabout, a few miles up the road. Had some pillock racing a few hundred yards along a country lane in a purple Diablo? too, then turning it, on the lane, to go the other way, seemingly for a photo-shoot or suchlike. Had to slow down twice due to that pillocks stupid/dangerous turning manouevres, (probably spelt that wrong, but can't be arsed checking )..

not just high end cars car manafactureres were struggling before this .having to convert to electric was pulling them down now this poor car sales and a lot of people are in the financial poo a lot will loose there jobs and prices are going to go sky high a mate works at Nissan and he recons a load will be laid off

Smart grid and home battery storage is the future. If everyone had a dishwasher sized home battery in their house, we wouldn't need hinckley point C and could totally flatten the bathtub curve over a 24hr period.

Electric cars batteries could be used for storage of power for home use and for commuting if thought was put into it, as they could recharge when there is low demand or from the homes own solar pv! There are some clever technologies just ahead of us that will make the world a better place but oil has to die off first!
