Locally we have some 23 wind turbines ,they have been up & running for almost five years , each turbine is reckoned to be able to supply 4,000 households with electricity per day .

If they’re the turbines in Brechfa Forest, I delivered most of the 33kv cable that went up there, and spent more than a few nights in the forest.

That must be worth a couple of pints of Brains Best as a royalty next time I’m passing .

the difficulty with that is that each EV needs an individual charging point, service stations can manage multitudes of vehicles each at the same time, so it's not really a realistic comparison ...

Wasn’t stated as a comparison,just what was reported- don’t shoot the messenger,someone earlier comments on the small amount of charge stations,which,according to R4 is wrong,maybe there’s not enough of them on the doomsayers routes.

If they're really going to have that comparison, then they'd have to compare the actual number of fuel pumps (not number of stations) against the number of electrical charging sockets for the comparison to be of any validity. Obviously they won't do that as they're nowhere near that level of equality yet... nor are the numbers of EV's comparable to IC cars, so it's a kinda nonsensical argument anyway.. The more interesting point would be the geographical coverage compared to quantities.

A friend of mine has fitted a few EV chargers for his customers, one with a Model X has a separate meter for the charger and racked up a bill of £400 in 6 weeks.

It's not even a like for like comparison really, as majority will be charged at home/work, I would imagine...

I wondered this - domestic electricity is subject to 5% VAT - so a separate meter is so you can be charged 20% VAT on "propulsion electricity"...?

aye charging at home probably, but I think that was always going to be the case, and for the short runs, back and fore onn one charge (for which EV's are ideal) that's fine, but the crux of the EV problem is always the range of them, agreed they're getting better, but if there was an infastructure of "external" charging points, then the range becomes less problematic.

Whatever happened to the idea that was bandied about of cars using battery packs that could be changed out at service stations, drive in, drop dead battery, replace with a fully charged, and drive out again. I thought this was a brilliant idea, seemed to have dropped off the radar.... probably couldn't get agreement between manufacturers etc.

You would not want to swap your brand new £4.5k battery pack with someones five year old one that won't hold charge would you?

Better idea was overhead power lines - like a tram or "bumper cars" - on main straight arterial routes to extend distance - that is an idea that would work.

from what I remmber the batteries were never yours, more like a rental agreement (same as welding bottles for example), so it wouldn't matters the age / quality of it, you would only have it until the next charge anyway. Don't know what happened to the idea, was on the news a good few years ago now, it will have to see if I can dig it back up.

Only Renault still have battery lease - every other manufacturer sells the battery with the EV

It will be pence/mile road tolls with data harvested over 3/4/5g or whatever. Sliding scale based on emissions. Get a bill at the end of each month. Those who drive the most pay the most.

Tesla demonstrated a battery swap faster than fully refilling an A8 (I think), presumably they chose a car with a particularly big fuel tank to make it look more impressive but hey, that's marketing. I believe the idea was scrapped in favour of developing faster chargers because the battery swap machine was ludicrously complicated and expensive.

In Formula E they change cars. If race teams can't work out how to swap a battery quickly what chance has Essex blonde got ? PS the argument of charging points vs filling stations on R4 was ridiculous. A single pump ( times say 6 at average garage ) could refill at least 8 cars in the time to charge one. Greeves 246

I am very much pro EV. I drive one, and I'd like to convert my old diesel van to electric propulsion...

When more & more business turn to using skype and multi conference calls /meetings the need for a lot of long distance car trips by sales people will disappear .

My lass has been conference meeting and skype working for over 18 years working from home. A couple of times a year there is a meet up session combined with further skill training etc for a couple of days ( well expensed and useful ).

Prior to those times she was driving 43 miles to work and often a few more whilst at work then 43 back in the evening , paying for the car & fuel herself .
