I think they are something that is quite easily understood and grasped by the younger generation who have grown up in a world of fixed monthly costs - the lower monthly cost of an EV when total cost of ownership is taken into account is something that leaves more money spare for avocado toast

I'm almost seventy years young , I was promoting protection of the environment & husbanding of our natural resources from mankind back in early 1970 when ecological was not a word commonly heard . Gave a talk to 30 or so to my so called intelligent leaders ..it was about five feet above their heads .

Fortunately I don't eat avocado .... Bleck! pure claggy pap. I'm a Yorkshireman on a decent fixed income with an engineering back ground , one who has short arms & very deep pockets

Just how many times have you actually got evidence that stationary turbines are static due to no wind across the whole of the UK or even a large part of it for that matter of fact .

Remember a blind man would be happy to see the turbines , a deaf man happy to hear them.. in other words it's down to the individual as to whether to accept them or not . People calmed down in their opposition when they saw the benefits of electricity pylons striding across the land , telegraph poles , street amps tv aerials , sky dishes etc.

You're likely to be dead in the next 25 years if I've got your age group right , it's highly likely that I will be , the kids that come into the world with these things in place will just accept them . My nephew summed it up very nicely to a happy tapper at his door wanting signatures against a solar & wind farm . " Who am I to deny my kids the luxury of electricity at an affordable price to their pocket and the world ".

Can you tow an electric car - or does it have to be a lifted recovery?

It depends on the car. Nissan Leafs and Renault Zoes which are solely FWD we tow on a dolly with the front wheels lifted. Teslas that are 4wd, or cars that use regenerative braking on the non-driven wheels are full-lift via flatbed only.

Isn’t that the same as a car with an auto gearbox? For fwd cars they put the front wheels in those little bogies to lift them off the ground, I guess an rwd with auto would be a lifted recovery (I should probably find out as I have an rwd auto!!)

Many of the RWD autos we rear lift, space allowing. Many can be towed a certain distance with the driven wheels rolling.

Wind turbines ? Hate the things. I went through an area in the south of the country i used to go on holiday in as a kid, lovely valley, great scenery, and they had it covered in hideous ugly windmills. Plus they are useless if the wind does not blow . Put them out at sea by all means.

I hate that argument, my grandad wouldn't even have them at sea because they spoil his view. Do they really look that bad? Worse than a power station billowing greenhouse gasses into the air? Worse than a coal mine or oil ring to run the power station? Worse than a massive rise in sea levels?

Yes, the maths is simple enough to work out and for sure the subscription generation will likely grow up with them.

But the point I'm making is that, at the moment, the total cost of ownership for an old, fully depreciated car is significantly less than a new one - especially an electric/hybrid electric, which tend to be more expensive off the bat.

E.g;

Just done it on our BEV (BMW I3) costing us 6k a year pretty much all of that is depreciation.

That compares to an annual TCoO, including fuel, depreciation, repairs.... everything, of under £2000 for my old 3series.

Now, that's not a fair comparison, of course as mine is old and an i3 is new. BUT, you can't get a BMW i3 for a few thousand. If you could, I'd have one already. If I could be convinced they'd last 15-20 years, they'd be getting there but it's a huge unknown at present.

The maths works well for early adopters or regular upgraders. Not so well for those happy with an older car.

The power station is right in the middle of Dublin city centre nearly. Coming into Dublin on the ferry, its nearly the first thing you meet, two huge chimneys on the south bank. It is (or was) an industrial area, boat yards, docks, factories etc, and its the perfect spot for it. Not some lovely rural area plastered with oversized pinwheels.

Green house gases ? As i said yesterday, a country as big as the UK only puts out 2% of the worlds green house gases. Ireland with a population about a tenth of the UK's, would correspond as 2%/10 = 0.2%, so destroying one part of the environment for such a small gain seems pointless to me. Its all about virtue signalling by our idiotic useless government.

We have a lot of wind turbines around here ...I think they look great , ...we also have a diesel fired power station down on the coast that looks dreadful and stinks with a plume of brown smoke ....

Because most people have an opinion on the subject - it is a well debated subject - some people feel strongly about it.

Most people fall in two differing camps - pro EV or anti EV.

It is pretty normal....

I... Can't make my mind up...? Is an electric car a good idea or not? God knows...?

Do I want an electric vehicle forced onto me - have my choice taken from me - that is another question..? Of which I don't have the answer for...!

What I do think is good - is people here have an opinion on Environmental issues. Which ever side of the debate they are on - it does mean they are thinking about it...

And while they are talking about it - someone from any side of the debate at any time - may come up with a good idea to help solve the problem...

You must have an uncomfortable existence torn between the benefits of them and the visual impact upon your mind ......they are everywhere sometimes even in the rat race towns & cities .

Moose what is the score for an Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with regen braking , two or four wheel drive at the flick of a switch ?. Just asking in case we ever need it towing .

There is not believed to be anywhere in England that hasn't been modified by humans infact we have been messing with environment for so long now that many species have addapted to our management techniques and so called re wilding projects cause more problems than managing the landscape in a traditional way
