How often are run on/off plates used in the real world, or are they mostly used for training?
An example... often found in FP (or PP) butt welds. Can be an essential part of achieving quality joint.

Yes there used to ensure the quality of the weld--starts and stops generally problematic. Yes lop em off and some shaping needed. FP/PP yes correct FP would be the the whole of the part and more PP would be but not limited to a fillet weld .Oh i see. So the whole weld section you use is perfect with no stops or starts in it.
I take it you just lop them off with a grinder when done?
What is FP/PP? Full penetration and part penetration?
