Evening guys.
Just started a strip down and clean up on my Taylor chuck. What do you guys use for oiling for chuck parts.

Don't use anything that's sticky. Grease is a no,it only helps the chips to gather inside the chuck scrolls, try some Teflon spray.

What about way oil.

Too thin, Spencer. You'll end up with a line of oil up your front, across the ceiling and down the back wall

Decent quality grease so the base oil won't migrate out in 5 minutes, and don't use very much as excess will just centrifuge out and you'll end up wearing it. If you have moly paste or teflon paste you could use that.

What about way oil.

Any lubricating oil will do. As MBB mentioned, any form of grease is historically a no-no with lathe chucks. Crap becomes embedded in it. Better a line of oil flung than a grinding paste within the chuck.

I use oil. I use the same oil as I do for the spindle.
Sure it flings it about a bit on first start up but my ocd soon sees it wiped and degreased off the back wall.

I've got some very "dry" moly paste I use for this type of job.

I assume that chuck is off that lathe you're refurbishing? It runs on bronze bearings doesn't it? If so your lubrication is a total loss system like my Myford.

If that is the case you will always have oil flinging off the chuck as it runs from the bearings, it can be a bit messy. So you will definitely not notice oil coming from the chuck itself! I used chainsaw chain oil on my chuck, applied with a brush & wiped off the excess.

All done now. It's had a complete strip. Clean and oiled.

Well. I didn't flood it but I make sure that all the rotating parts get a coating of oil.

No fun when you don't have the time and/or inclination, is it. Mine had barely seen me for the last couple of years.

Having time in the shed is great. As my work has come to an end for the year. But it's good in one respect but bad in an nother as money soon runs out. So it's doing private jobs here and there . Almost finished building a double garage for the step son. Hopefully will bring in a few dollars .
