If you buy a brand name, spares are available (e.g. Miles Tool and Machinery, L & S). On a lot of them, the riving knife holds the guard and for it to do this, it has to project above the top of the blade. So when you want to cut a rabbit or dildo you have to remove it anyway. Buying a spare one and cutting it down level with the top of the blade and foregoing the guard is about the best option if you are using it yourself.

^ That's exactly what I did on mine, a Jet JTS250. I haven't overwhelmed it yet as a DIYer. It's mounted on a castored trolley so it can be tucked away, the brakes aren't brilliant but a couple of door chocks stop it moving when doing heavy cuts.

I have a draper 10" bench saw had it for over 30 years and still going strong.
the only thing that I had to replace was a bearing on the main shaft.
dont know what the new ones are like and probably made in China.
as for portable they're all fairly big with wheels on.
a work mate had a beaut of a saw bench .
it had an cast aluminium body well made and you could carry in one had.
I've been searching for a used on but cannot find any.
got one of the cheapy ones given.
but the guide was flimsy as f.
made my own and now I've got a nice little bench for those small cuts.

Fine i bow out of this

I owned the makita and hated it and replaced it with a Starite which i found a far better and more stable machine

However i accept that the makita is more portable and just as capable and just as accurate

is available tomorrow and comes with a warranty


Still think the cross cut sledge was something you'd find in a christmas cracker

Don't worry - I did listen to you and thanks to everyone else who replied. It was really useful to get some info about the choices available and experiences with the different saws.

I suspect the Makita would have done what I wanted, but I was offered something much more beautiful with a cast iron bed, and have found a courier who can deliver it safely. It's going to be brilliant! Straight cuts AND a happy smile. :-)

Sorry, I seem to have wandered into the Anne Summers table saw thread by mistake

For making "rabbits & dildos" a decent wood turning lathe is far more useful, the risk of kickback with a dildo on a circular saw should not be underestimated.

Good choice as the makita was like a toy when i compared it to the Startrite machine that i replaced it with

I would reccomend you buy a few different blades

One cutting cutting rubbish
one for fine work

and a spare for when you end up blunting the general blade

Also try NOT to leave the fine blade in the machine as you will forget some day and throw something over the machine that will have a nail in it

and

its a left hand thread for the blade nut

The Wadkin arrived today. Had to move it inside by myself. Really tired now :-)

It's going to be brilliant! I was having so many problems with the not quite straight cuts from the Titon with the curved bed. Bed on this one looks a little more substantial! Fence probably a bit more handy too.

Restoration by @brewdexta is immaculate.

lovely saws with a cast iron bed wish I had bought one 40 years ago they were well expensive then and well sought after . not much use for one now even though they sometimes pop up for not a lot of money

Funny thing on this one is a plaque saying it was supplied by the Modern Machine Company, Belfast. 'Modern' these days implies cost reduction and that doesn't seem to have been applied here.

I remember a woodworking machine shop buying all new gear to save on tax they sold the old stuff off and it fetched big money and they got slated with tax on it they were gutted

Not on the same level as the Wadkins but the Elu flip saws are pretty good.

I bought this one after looking for an AGS10 or 12 for a while. They all seemed to be overpriced of painted by some idiot who hadn't discovered brushes or spray guns or had bits missing. I was walking the dog when an Ebay alert came up on my search. It was blowing a gale and weeing down but the buy it now price was right and it said Newcastle. Thinking that under Lyme or on Tyne were not far away I bought it while Peggy was taking a dump. It was only when I got home from dog walking that I discovered if was Newcastle near Belfast.

@fizzy helped to shift it. But as per the proverbial buses coming all at once, an AGS12 came up nearby at the right price so I bought it and did the AGS10 up for sale, but with no urgency.

Since then I have found two gorgeous Wadkin PKs to renovate. Once sorted, one will stay in the barn as a rip saw for raw timber, the other will go into the workshop for everything else.

I had a Metabo Pk200 until the wadkin, not bad for the size and money but not remotely comparable to the Wadkin.
