Could you make suspension turrets in the Spitfire boot and use upright shock absorbers ? Have a look at Beardsmore brothers website, they do some nice modifications like these and use bits of wood to model it, my kind of engineering.

Thats what i would have done to start with gone straight to the racers and used something similar to what there using
