Quality control is poor with them ive had some that are great and others that need rivet punch in.
angle grinder with a 1mm slitting disc
Same as for steel wire armoured cable, you create a very neat end that's ready for use.
The trick is that you grind through the cable while the insulation is still on, then trim it back afterwards.
As long as you are talking ordinary copper core 25-35mm2 square cable then you don't need anything clever.
I have some Knipex ones which do 35mm2 easily even they are probably aimed at normal electrical installation type. I also a have cheap pair that I bought on one of tool vans, USA made and cost about £5 and work really well. They were cheap enough that I can keep them as a dedicated tool for the job.
Shear types do the cleanest cut but even a decent pair of side cutters can be used, I am genuinely surprised by all the suggestions of angle grinders and such like, totally understand it for armoured but you could probably get through this sort of cable with a quality pair of scissors.
Knipex shears
they should be no play in your grinding disc sny wobble and bearing want replacing or new grinder
On my old grinder I had to turn the back flange over to grip thinner discs or they would stop spinning when they got caught in the metal I was cutting.
That's the oneshttps://www.toolstation.com/wire-cutter/p63882
These work fine for under a tenner, the big Tesco near me had the same ones for less than £5.
If you are getting into 35mm+ or making them all the time then start saving up for some ratcheting ones
I fully understand the use what you to hand mentality but I just don't get all the messing about with bits of wood, bits of tube, grinders, hacksaws when a pair of cable shears will do the job perfectly every time in just 1 second.
The other thing I find the Knipex ones are brilliant for is clipping the old dog's claws because don't crush like side cutters and actually cut through them.
I got a pair of these for making up car battery leads
