Chap who lives around the corner has a wobby pulley on his stump grinder. Think it's a STIHL and it has a taper lock fitting. Fitting looks good, shaft looks ok regards runout but the keyway is mullered. I have previously told him "I can fix anything"...
So I can either cut another keyway into the shaft (he's dropping it off with me later) or weld up the damaged keyway and grind that back. I am wary of welding a shaft which already has a taper for obvious reasons (warping/bending). Also wary of cutting a second keyway and weakening the shaft. Once I get my hands on it, I will tidy it up, have a good look then report back here.
Just wondering out loud if I might even get away with using a chemical metal to build up the old keyway. I wouldn't expect a taper lock (bit like a collet) to slip with any sort of restraint and if it fits properly, it would keep the slightly softer (?) JB Weld (?) in place. Naturally, the front end of a stump grinder is the last place you want to make a weak repair.
