Stuff you have painted today

Not today, not even this year, but 2022 it seems.

As I had the deck off my used and abused MTD ride on mower, I thought I'd see how the paint to the underside was fairing.

I thought I posted photos of the deck when I painted it but can't find them.
The before condition is in the post below

I think the fiberglass would be too brittle and probably delaminate under the vibration and the hail of shrapnel from the blades but might be worth a try.

About 10 years ago I bought a ride on that had the deck welded up.
I blasted it and had it galvanised.
I never clean it or even take the worst of the caked grass off it from one year to the next.



I had always intended painting the deck as well, but am just getting around to it now.
I pressure washed it and gave it a going over with a wire brush. (The galv is certainly getting used up in places.)

Anyway the top side has held up really well and the only paint break down is because of mechanical damage.

The underside gets far more abuse and it got Jotamastic 90 and stonechip.

Again it has held up well.

The stone chip is coming off in places but the epoxy is holding up fine.
No signs of rust anywhere.

It doesn't look like I tried glass flake, just the stonechip.
If I don't scrap it, I'll have another look in a year or two.

I've a deck to refurb this winter. Was the galvanising worth it or should I just sandblast and epoxy primer it? Maybe truck bed liner would be good?

I think galvanising is a great job on something like this.
It gets into all the nooks and crannies even where paint might not reach.

With both galv and paint, if the paint breaks down locally the galv will still protect and the paint will prevent the galvanising from depleting unnecessary.

Epoxy would work well on it's own, but it's easy to miss a bit so it will need more ongoing maintenance.
If you keep an eye and repair any damage or paint break down it should last for ever.

slight change of course today.

after a trip to bideford and back this morning, i took the outer rear wheels and front wheels off the lorry and transported them home.

i then needle gunned all the paint off the front wheels (and the fact i could do that shows how badly it had adhered...) and then sand blasted them.

the rear wheels can wait til tomorrow to do the same to.

i then painted the 3 wheels that the old tyres came on in sunlight silver. i will then be putting the 3 no good tyres back on them and will put them back in this months auction.

which means i gained nothing by buying those wheels except a load of work, for probably a hole in my pocket. maybe they will sell for enough to buy a second had steer tyre in the right size..... maybe.

and tinted with lacquer. it is far shinier in person... in fact it looks terrible in the pics. it is very chromy in person. it looks ok actially, not a patch on real chrome but i didnt really expect it to be.
