Made yesterday...
I'm pretty sure I said I'd never make another bowl again. However, short-notice birthday present requirements took precedence over personal preferences so I had a few more goes to see if I'd magically got any better at it (spoiler: I haven't).
One lovely bit of Sycamore and one lovely bit of Spalted Beech ended up in the firewood pile, but I did manage to get something bowl-ish out of a piece of Elm and piece of English Walnut (the latter of which nearly ended up in the firewood pile but I realised there was enough left for another go at a shallower tray thing).
Two bowls out of five attempts is not that bad... maybe? If it wasn't for the magical effects of 80 grit sandpaper, it probably would have been 0 out of 5! Perhaps I should stick to boxes and tool chests!

Which is all part of the job, so I am not sure why you are not justifiably proud of those? They look like something I would love to have gracing my house.

I'd be happier if I'd spent most of the time turning and a bit of sanding at the end. With these bowls, I spent much more time sanding than I did turning (as I made such a mess of the turning and the only way I could see to recover was to use coarse sandpaper for a long long time). Also, the other three attempts (two of which were on really lovely bits of wood) ended up as firewood as the mistakes were too big to be able to deal with even with sandpaper.

Today I made a hole in my roof and fitted a Velux.

My wood turning friend swears by abranet sandpaper.
It may seem expensive but it lasts for ages because it doesn't clog up and works really well with dust extraction.

I use Abranet on my Mirka sanders, it is night and day difference when the sander has extraction.
