I didn't do anything practical at school - no metal or wood work. But my dad was self employed, designing and building packaging machinery with a workshop at home, so I got to play. So while I have no interest in making roses, I have snips, hammers, files, etc. Not sure if my Edwards box and pan would help in making one or not
I guess someone who has pushed a pen, driven a mouse their entire life simply won't have any of it, but fancies a go - so where do you go, how do you start, what do you do if you've no idea, no knowledge, and in reality, no actual need - I learnt to cut, fold, weld as I needed to repair a car as a teenager, after learning electrics, hand tools etc racing model cars as a kid ( and it's amazing how many people simply don't know how to hold, or use, a screwdriver!) - so if you've got the time, inclination and the money, I guess it's a nice enough way to start and feel pleased about coming away with something to show for it, even if you never do it again.

2.0 esab welding rods is what i have in stock i know the end has got to be hot so there is marks to get the tip hot before welding startsThin sheet with arc is not difficult but its much easier if you use 1.6mm rods and an alu plate backing to pull some of the heat away.
Ah, then I'd have to fix furnace! My casting so far has not been too successful yet. I will get back onto the projects soon..
I think quickest will be to use bandsaw.
the sheet is 1.5mm the box section is less than 1mm the last pic is the settings on a sip 90 arc welder
first off tack the 1.5 to the box section and then shape it straight inner tacks are whilst in place needed im welding left to right

It's not just making things like the rose it is visualizing them first, I have no concept of that style of thing & if I cant see it in my minds eye it as near impossible for me to make it.

If you don't have them for the Tirfor or electric winch .... Get him to make in mild steel 4 anchor strips 60 x 60 x 8 mm or so thick angle with six staggered anchor pin holes ( 3 each side ) with 35 mm in dia pin hole in each strip ) .
Pins to have a hot forged point being 900 mm long x 25 mm AF hex anchor pins with a 15 mm thick 60x60 thick extractor lugs welded both sides on opposite faces with a hole in them big enough to take the anchor pin to help in getting them out . Plasma cut the lugs and holes ???
Forge the ends of the angle flat on each end so they are double thick mess and put a 35 mm holes in the flattened double up ends to take a decent shackle so they can be run out in a chain or a fan network . They are light enough to hump about one handed and yet each anchor link can hold about 3-5 tons fully pinned with the pins @ 750 deep at 60 to 45 degree with points towards the load and cross angled at 45 degree under the inverted angle iron links .

Made this little catch plate for a mate’s incubator. As it turns, the pin moves in a slot in a tray, rolling the eggs round every now and again.
The hub is driven by a D shaped shaft, but since I can’t make a D shaped hole, I went for a grub screw.
Black plastic was an offcut from an engineering shop, so I guess Delrin?

It's been awhile....
So this is the result me rooting at Fusion360 for a month on and off. Leaf shoot collector for my ride on. So far just mocked up in PLA. I have ABS waiting for the final version that should hopefully this week. Obviously a pipe will be connected to a collection bin on the rearr

Had a quick half hour in the workshop and made a start on my exhaust for the diesel heater to go through the workshop wall, nothing special just mild steel tube that was kicking around.
First time doing any exhaust fabrication and quite enjoying it so far, still got loads to do, probably going to paint it black in high temperature paint.

Worked on the sleeve to go through the wall and cut a hole into some 316 stainless for a plate to go on the uPVC cladding. I cut the hole with a cutting disc in the die grinder and finished it with a 50mm flap disc, worked out quite well just took about 45 minutes. 
The sleeve will eventually get packed with rockwool insulation and then fire cement on each end.

Seems there are a lot of folk of a certain age who regularly go on courses, pottery, metal work, wood work etc. not so much because they want to start a new hobby more to keep then occupied and get away from their partner for a couple of days.To be honest I play around with lots of stuff and I would not have a clue where to start making something like that.
