Also for my sawbench. The dust extractor port on it has a spigot around 25mm long then there is a hose takeoff to the top of the guard to catch sawdust there. The extractor hose doesn't stay on. I made an adapter form an offcut of 90mm downpipe. Glued up some wood offcuts, turned the former and used a hot airgun to soften the plastic. It took a couple of goes to get it tight fitting.
I think I need a 3D printer - it would have been faster and I would have been able to reinforce areas with a 3D print.

I have had quite a few customers want me to change the ratio on their differentials. This requires setting the pinion depth. I 3D printed pinion depth measuring tool I made based on drawings of an "official" one from the 90s. Next step is to get it made from a solid piece of steel, it's going to be expensive right?

Possibly not too expensive, could be made as a weldment and turned between centres.

I made a very small loft hatch into a much bigger one.

The old one was only about 10" wide.
I've been wanting to do this for months but waited until the hottest day of the year before I did it

What degree of accuracy do you need to work to when setting it up? Are the two bearing surfaces in line and you just need the height from their surfaces? If so would a peice of gauge plate lain across the bearing surfaces and a depth micrometer for measuring the pinion height suffice?

The measurement required is from the bottom of the bearing surfaces to the pinion. I suppose it could be done with gauge plate but then you'd need to measure the distance of the bottom of the gauge plate to the bottom of the bearing surfaces

Which is why I asked how accurate it needed to be.
If the gauge plate is resting across the bearing surfaces and the gauge plate is a know height, in this example 25mm with a width of 1mm,

a depth micrometer resting on top of the gauge plate would only need the gauge plate dimension subtracting from the reading:

Alternatively if less than 333mm between bearing surfaces you could use a piece of 25mm silver steel, bore it to mount your existing dial gauge through the middle.

I see what you're saying. But the bearing surfaces are circular. So laying a flat plate across it you need to know the distance of from the cord of the circle where it rests to the bottom of the circle. This of course can be calculated but is likely to introduce error. I have no idea how accurate it needs to be, the purpose of this measurement is to calculate a pinion shim size which are available in 0.05mm graduations. I may be getting the wrong end of the stick, if you can't tell, I'm new to this

I've just read the other thread on cost of bespoke part. Cheaper way would be just have a piece of precision ground round bar across the bearing surfaces and measure the gap with feeler gauges.

@. I would just have something like 25mm round ground, don't think that will flex over the length you are talking off, you could hold it against the bearing surfaces and slide feeler gauges in to find the gap.

@. Are you sure you're not over thinking this. All the various manufacturer jig/tool/fixtures I've come across seem to want to hide the fact that what you're really setting is the pinion centre distance. Those .05mm shims are pretty much .002" in old money. When I've built/rebuilt Hypoid setups, within a few thou' has always been good enough to get a good pinion to crownwheel 'print' Obviously it's a lot easier to measure with the more common split carrier bearing housings, as in this Dana 44

Or this Ital/Caterham 7 diff.

I’ve still got to add the inlet pipe on the end and a lever for the centre drum so it can rotate between demist, dash & footwell.
