Had great grandads medals in a bag for far too long so had an idea to try and neatly display them , Cardboard Aided Design prototype here but roughly about the layout I think I will go for

Odd as missing one of the ribbons from the ribbon stripe at the top

Hopefully will make them smart again with a polish and good display

Last few room temperature sensors for the house heating system controls, this is to replace heating sensors built into cables that plug into the structure cabling that people keep unplugging so these will use spare alarm cable wires that I put in almost 20 years ago when we renovated the house.

First drill a blank face plate, not all the way through, I drill it until you can see the light shine through the plastic. This just reduces the latency a little and gives the sensor somewhere to register to while the epoxy is setting.

The sensor is a Dallas DS18B20 "one wire" sensor. Its not a thermistor, each one is addressable via the bus. A sliver of wood to get the right angle of the dangle and a bit of 5 minute epoxy, then go for a coffee.

Test them and label them up. Total cost, about 2.50 quid each including back box and face plate.

The next batch will be for the boiler room, these will be a different design, glued into the middle of a magnet like this.

This way I can attach them to the heat stores in various places as they are steel vessels. I'll test them to make sure the magnet does not alter their performance in any way. There's several reasons for adding temp sensors.

First, there's no pellet sensor in the pellet hopper, I tend to check it every few days but when I'm away the missus will usually wait until it runs out. I could try adding an optical sensor to the hopper, but if the heat store cools down then it shows the boiler has stopped. Could be a fault, or out of pellets so covers both events.

The other reason is to check temperature stratification in the heat stores for purely geek reasons. I'll also put some in various strategic points, flow, return etc. but as the fittings are brass I'll use a different technique for fixing.

Not orders as such, just knocked a few up to have as stock, same as I tend to do with pens. Should have started them earlier to get a few sold before Christmas! Drop me a pm if you're interested in one.

Well I finaly finished one of those projects, first spotted on here and i thought "I can improve/make one of those, for my new improved MkII Tig welding bench, the swing out seat yet to come. Error No1 Snap the tap:

Being slow in the "learned my lesson" department I then went at it and did it again, didn't think I would get away with drilling it out a second time but to my amazement I did. Not made the thumbscrews yet, but I will, eventually. Works a treat:

t is bolted to a realy hefty bit of plate welded to the bench which is drilled and tapped.
The post is a bit of EN something or other that I made into a bearing holder, I dismantled the original swing arm bit and fitted a couple ball races:

it all appears to work well and should stop me scrabbling about for "Bits of stuff"to use as a support and take some of the jerkiness out of my welding, we will see.

Top tip . If you use a frying pan for a seat it MUST be NON STICK.
B****r now I've got to make an arm rest but I bet it wont be as posh as that.

Started to make a cage for the Soil pipe at a local Scout hut. The scallies come along and kick it to bits covering the field in waste so not good, I am trying to put something around it to protect it. I am going to hammer a couple of lengths of rebar into the ground and weld it to them, we will see.
It needs some tabs for anchor bolts welding on:


I can get power to the area so I will take the set and use a couple of those nice Fincords I nicked from @Tinbasherdan to weld the RHS on and the rebar "legs" They are nice rods Dan. Bring more!

The other job I was on today was sorting out the tray for the CNC Lathe, now that it is going to be bench mounted and without the benefit of the stand I set to and made a frame from 40mm Box for it to sit on and give the tray some rigidity, I also welded up a couple of holes in it and this made it buckle quite badly so I made double sure the box section frame was square and flat then welded the tray to it, came out well in the end, at the powder coaters now:



Used my pal's job as a work table, one thing I know his work WILL be flat and square so a good base to work from:
