Made a gate to keep the horse out of the vegetable garden. Was donated a couple of bits of railing, one long one all on an angle from a balustrade, which I dismantled and refabricated as the main gate a while back, and a smaller straight bit that I cut down and reengineered into the garden gate.

I was particularly pleased with the bolt arrangement that I made with a bit of spare rod and some flat bar. I ground a groove halfway through the rod, bent it 90deg and welded the cut (2mm Pecol 6013 @ 70A), bent the flat bar over a bit of rod and welded it all up in position. I made the hinges too from a bit of angle and short lengths of rod: drilled the angle for the rod and welded it in place under the hinge.

Good job on the gate and bolt arrangement. It looks quite remote where you are. I do like to see other parts of the world I am not likely to visit so thanks for posting

Thanks MOL, it's up a mountain in central Portugal and the views are fantastic. There will be more pics from time to time as and when welding projects arise.

Set out to practice my welding by making a shoe rack out of horseshoes, so cleaned off the shoes, tidied them up enough to mig weld. cut the metal rods, and basically faffed about getting set up, then plugged in the welder, and nothing happened.

After having a bit of a panic, I remembered I took out the fuse to test something else. Fitted the new fuse, and off we went, but apparently there was no ‘go gas’. Checked the bottle to find it was empty, but surely one bottle lasts forever?

Remembered I still had a part filled disposable bottle somewhere, so changed all the fittings, and finally started welding. Ten minutes and ten tack welds later, that ran out too.

There are days when nothing is easy, and everything you do is an uphill fight.

A bit of good did come out of it. I haven’t really used the tig welder too much, so dug it out, and lo…. I did some welding. I think the reason I haven’t been using it, is a lack of confidence to even really make a start (or what we used to call “absolutely no idea what I’m doing, and too feart to try”).

As you can see from the pictures, the welding is a mess. Nothing was really clean enough, settings were all wrong, you name it, it were wrong. But I had fun making that mess, and learned more about tig in that one hour than I had before. More importantly, I was not shy about fiddling about with the settings, and only panicked once when I set fire to something I was using as a spacer. And who knew you could make metal could glow so brightly.

I’ll cut the worst bits apart, and do them over properly some time next week, as playtime is over, and back to work for me.

I also made a stand for SWMBO's hose so it works as a sprinkler. I've heard you can buy such things as sprinklers but where's the fun in that? It's from a couple of spare rods from the gate fabrication and a short length of angle.

Folding clothesline for inside a garage . For a good customer who hasn’t got a garden and needs to have full size shed when using it . Same customer who got the winch in a press

With bad weather forecast for yesterday, (Wednesday) I needed to get some kerbs sorted down at my lockup before the trench filled up with mud again

Looked online Monday night to hire one and none available so I knocked up this

No plans, not even the back of a fag packet, thrown together from what was in my scrap bin, minimal prep and just went for it with the MIG as it was getting too late to be out making noise



And it worked

Starting to get a better hang of uphill vertical stick welding , 2.5mm 6013 rods running about 80A I think just on my rather thick test box section I practise on.

I realised as I take on bigger projects I cant easily move the work around to make a easy flat weld so teaching myself more positions

Slag was very easy to remove , just a swipe with glove and comes off all in one

Compared to the pro's on here might be a bit low quality but I'm really pleased with it compared to the porosity ridden bird dirt I first did vertical

Ive had an aldi bandsaw quite a long time today the vice mofifications made their way to top of the list.
M20 threaded rod, turned down ends and tapped one m12, then a 26x6 washer for the jaw to sit against. Turned a nyloc nut into a normal nut.

Finally,after months,got this finished,it goes with the bridge,previously featured on these very pages.
The 3 castings,on each column are aluminium,made in Derbyshire were £1200+vat,that was in March.
Oh,and remember the distortions from the galvanisers,this is post straightened.All etched and painted now.

Good observation,it’s 800/350mm aluminium cast panels,with 12mm squares perforating thru,UK made,and expensive.

Just my contribution. After many interruptions and site visits, there has been some more progress on the pontoons

The second one is now completely welded outside with the chines dressed, ready for turning over and welding on the deck and alli angle to attach the top frame to. Plan to have this all completed and delivered this week as some playground equipment is required. Might even get to start the hood for the fume extraction and get that fitted as it is greatly required, especially cutting steel and stainless steel.
