I missed the bit where he said 180km, that would be thick blue smoke!!

Surprisingly not a huge amount, but there nonetheless.
I had an A-series lump that wasn't run in right and consumed oil at 60 miles per pint. There was a haze behind the car I could see in the mirror, but not clouds of it.
New set of rings and run in like I stole it cured that.

Don't actually spend much time at the metal lathe (aside from teaching the basics) but this afternoon I actually made things I'll actually be using... thought I'd better get in there whilst I can at work as there's a general feeling in the air that this may well turn out to be more than just a two week holiday...

Found some rusty old 35mm Round bar and after giving it a good clean with some Emery paper on the lathe I made four 28mm dogs/stops. Hadn't done any precise measuring but I made them slightly undersize at 27.85 - and they work a treat.

Now, this might not look like much, but it is my first bit of machine code I have written without any help or template or copied from someone or intervention by anyone, all my own work. A simple 30mm circle:

Oil alarm light does work but it did never light on to warn me that there was no oil .

The oil warning light indicates low oil pressure, not low level . NEVER rely on the oil light to indicate level

Socket for this buddy gets crispy.
450A beast of a machine.
AD conversation was not consistent.
Turns out to be bad contact on plcc socket.
Try to find a torch for 4mm tungsten.

Oil pressure light may be fine, there may have been enough oil left in to pressurise the system. You may have an indicator for oil level as well as pressure, but don't rely on it, check with dipstick as well.

Bored a hole to mount this. Made it a shrink fit which Ill do tomorrow. Now to start todays foor tiling.

Cable tidy time, all 3 hung and clipped back to move smoothly and not snag plus an obligatory bracket in stainless. Hacked a chunk off the power feed to clear the Y axis scale. (That power feed thing is a project on its own and needs a complete rethink.) Why the silicone bronze? It was there and the steel Tig rods were out of reach!

I hope that it didn't light on because there still was enough oil to lubricate the engine .
I don't trust it but I believe that it should have shown a warning

Any oil is better than no oil.
Go with the 10w40 cheapest for this change, because there's no point putting expensive oil in an engine which might burn it up.
If this fill doesn't burn up or leak out, put better oil in next time.
PS the maker's oil change interval might be far too long; it's not uncommon for them to say 14,000 miles or some such. That's utter bs and to be safe I always stick to 6,000 miles.
Long oil change intervals are to keep fleet owners happy, not the private owners.

Oil pressure light and dipstick are everything I can use to understand if there's oil in the engine.

Think of the sump as a tank. The pickup for the pump will be at the bottom. The oil pressure switch will turn on the warning light when there is no oil pressure coming from the pump, and that's when you're going to be saying goodbye to bearings fairly promptly. Now the dipstick (if you're lucky enough to have one... thanks for that BMW) will be showing the max level at somewhere higher up the sump ie. the max level the manufacturer wants you to fill the sump. But on many cars (at least all I think I've ever seen) the dipstick doesn't go to the bottom of the sump, so (not that I'd recommend it) you can have a level below the end of the dipstick and still have normal oil flow.

First catapult done. I could tighten the springs more, but it throws hard enough as is. It throws stuff clear around when the arm is at the top of the arc, so I only needed a soft stop at the front.

You're thinking right ,my engine for example should have 1.5 litres of oil at lowest level (below dipstick) , and nearly 3 at highest .
