I cut some vents in the motor mount for the grinder thing Ive been making. Aso got a video but this tit recorded in slowmo by mistake, watch it at 2x.. and no sound.

The pcd inserts came in a different box with hinged lid, stupid design. I knew it would happen eventually. As I opened the lid, the unused insert pinged off under the bench amongst swarf and scrap. 10 minutes looking, no luck, I might have to tidy up

Many more to do, then everything after, feels like it will never be done

It's a suicide , applying tiles at 2 o' clock of the morning .
I believe that you need to finish as quickly as possible.

Pretty lousy quality on these photos, but got the throwing arm and "spoon" done. Basically done now, finishing remains. Maybe some kinda feet. I used a wood router bit to make the gouge, I modified it and cut off the bearing that was used to follow along edges. It was broken anyway, a cheap 1/2 router bit set from ebay. I needed a pilot hole though so I used a normal 12mm router to make that, then I plunged the router bit on the mill and moved it a little along the X-axis to make an oval indentation.

I might need some kinda soft "catcher" for the arm so it doesn't break itself when firing.

Looking good but I would have taken of the skirting boards on the right hand side. It would have made life a little easier for you and they don't look anything special so would have been easy and cheep to replace.

Looks like a real weapon

the missing arm to stop the travel of the arm - is this an oversight? You'd want the "catcher" to be pretty high up the arm, to limit the torque exerted on it by the inertia of the arm...

The original design has a stop but it's much farther down, I am getting the impression that the payload will be thrown away on it's own when it reaches a certain point in the swinging arc. It will require some testing to see.

Some oak burr timber from scrap. These are the bits that the sawmill was going to dump when I had an oak tree planked over 4 years ago. They have been sitting in the barn waiting until I had the right tools.

So I'm using this as a dry run before trimming the planks to size, seemed a shame to waste them.

First trim them to just under 300mm wide which is the width of my new planer thicknesser, plus the band saw max height is 330mm. This gave a nice straight edge for it to balance on while resawing.

Next cut it into slices. I use a Kreg resaw guide. The blade is a M42 3tpi 3/4" from Tuffsaws. You want a nice deep gullet when resawing to take away the sawdust. This is a good general purpose blade that is ok with resawing if you take it steady.

That's the blue thing standing up. It's got a bit of a crown to it so you can pivot the timber on it if the blade starts to wander.

I got two 36mm slices off of it. This first one has a a bit of a cup on it, but the PT will fix that.

Here's a slice after going through the PT, and a touch of oil to show the grain. There's a few shakes in it, but that's to be expected. It will move a bit more now its resawn, so I'll leave it a couple of weeks then put through the PT again. It's from the outside so not quartersawn so may cup a little bit more. The swirly bits will move more than the long grain but after the next go through the PT it will not move much more, if it does it adds to the character.

The planks have far fewer shakes, but less character as it goes closer to the centre of the log and most will end up being a dining table.

I'll decide what do with these bits later. I have the faces of some small tea drawers for the kitchen that would suite them nicely, or a couple of beer tables for the brewery.

I will probably fill the shakes with resin, I may even add a bit of colour.

I've got a couple more of these to do so should end up with a for bit of wood that would have otherwise end up as firewood.

we are calling it the space ratchet, The ISS has a 3d printer and NASA started experimenting some years ago emailing them files to print of tools and bits and bobs they need. This ratchets file was made public. No reason just thought it would be cool to print with the kids. Its actually pretty nice in the hand and going in the tool box.

Today I made (or at least nearly finished making) four planes (based on an idea from a book):

Made out of beech, walnut and gauge plate. They're for ploughing grooves in box/drawer sides for a base. One day I'll get a plough plane, but most uses for it will probably be this and it would take me far longer to set up a plough plane than it would to grab one of these planes and plough a groove. They're in pairs so that I can pick the appropriate one for a given grain direction: two make 3 mm grooves, 3 mm deep, 3 mm from the fence; the other two are similar but replace all the 3s with 5s.

After a fair amount of fettling and getting them set up, I did some test grooves in a couple of offcuts of oak (visible in the picture). In those short lengths, it takes about 10 seconds to plough a groove. I doubt I could even find the right router cutter in that time, let alone set up a router, so I think these will get a fair amount of use.

They'll get a coat of oil once I've finished fettling.

I made some spare cutters in other sizes too (although I've only hardened & tempered the 3 mm and 5 mm ones). For some reason the 3 mm and 10 mm ones didn't make it into this photo:

Made my saw moveable.... The hard way as always :doh:

Bought countersunk M8 bolts for the castors but the heads are bigger than my widest countersink bit...

The M16 threaded bar had to be turned down to 13mm as i have a gap between 13 and 19 mm in the bits department...

Both then had to be welded in...

And lifting it the 6" to fit them would have been much easier if I had the foresight when unloading it to put it under the roof joist so I could employ my block and tackle to lift the 280kg rather than levering up 10mm at a time until I could get the trolley jack underneath :whistle:
