I notice you too have one of the Mitutoyo QuantuMikes. They are just the worst invention ever.

Had the 0-25 and 25-50 for quite a few years and I think they are brilliant, why do you dislike?

Why? I thought you would have worked that out for yourself by now. Because everything else is just rubbish once you have used one of these and trust me ONE is just not enough, I am looking at compatible calipers, do I need another just to carry around and measure stuff, shall I just get one of each, or two. Worst thing to have happened, I need to replace everything. Ruined once you have used one.

Perzackly, bloody terrible things, the work of the devil! I actually have one of the analogue/digital Mitutoyo 0-1" mics too and that is fine as the numbers clicking round are very tactile, still a bit slow though.

I sold one of them on here last week Well mine was a 0-25 rather than imperial.
I have analogue mic's up you about 500mm I think, only used once in a blue moon but they are there for the odd times I need them.

I like watching those machines, but what you made there ^^ remind me of the bits on the pull frame of a Toro Greensmaster ride-on mower - have a look at parts 20:1 and 20 here.....

I sold one of them on here last week Well mine was a 0-25 rather than imperial.

I saw that, I was very tempted but all joking aside, the QuantuMike series is just fabulous. If you get it wrong using one, take up Macrame or something because engineering isn't for you.

Sorry, I was looking at the actual schematic & copied the web address...bloody 'Muricans revert to the main page! . It ball end on the front roller of the cutting head is very like that you made.

So today
As been one of those days which you're going to remember ,lot of learning ,lot of failure, little bit of hope but it's just illusion and .... might be better start talking about what I've done today.
So didn't get up enough early to go to work .
So I've been working on my lombardini LA65/58 engine .
Struggled the entire morning attempting to get it run
Spark timing issue.
After lunch I've got the classic light bulb on my head .
So I've understood that the timing reference marks on the flywheel are wrong .
So had to check valves to figured out the position on the flywheel to the carter to know in which position is top dead center.
So made a mark on the flywheel and one on the carter .
Another one at -30° from top dead center .
Magneto has a tapered shaft that works like a Morse drill but into a gear that spins 1 to 1 crankshaft revolution.
No timing key or reference on those two....
So tap with the hammer to break them a part.
Make the reference matching with the points which start opening .
Tighten a nut
Check
Done again, again , again and again (20 times?) Till I've managed to make the timing references match .
It started at the first pull ,I was really happy till it died after 30 seconds.
I've thought that was a carb issue but it didn't start again.
Check the timing and wasn't right

Done again but this time the nut tighter .
But timing isn't correct gg for me ...
To break the gear loose again I've broken the magneto housing
So I've most likely killed this engine

I have to take a part the engine to try to save the magneto .
Not sure about
I'll probably need to buy an honda GX clone .


While lunch I've been informed that a friend of mine is probably positive to covid .
If he'll results positive I'll have to do the test

The brass extension pins were yesterday. Made an abs alignment spacer to go on the bottom, then filled it with layers of abs sheet and mek slurry.
Abs and mek do not stick to nylon so it should slide out ok.

So is this your full time job now or side gig?

and was it trial and error where you figured out how much to preset the box section?

Side gig. I'm in the office for 8.5 hours (as you might be able to tell, it's been a quiet week!) and then I've been doing 5-6 hours most nights and Saturdays on these. I think I'd go crazy if I had to do them full time month in month out!

Trial and error TBH. It took less presetting than I thought it might. Stainless yield strength is funny compared to steel. I have some monster 9 foot legs to make after some oddballs, and I'll have to make a clamping jig for them since they won't fit on the table lol

Quickly got fed up with tripping over packets of rods, and having them slide out the end of the tubes every time I moved them, so a trip to the plumbers merchant round the corner and ..

Not today but rather yesterday, but as I was working down on a boat next to it today I took some pics.

Migged up an aluminium rope deflector and filled two stainless hauler knife covers.

Finished off and fitted the Aluminum roller table and baiting extension.

Starboard section hinges up to allow access to the bow side of it if required.

I copper plated some kydex.

Home-made conductive paint (50/50 solvent based polyurethane yacht varnish + tbay graphite, bit of acetone as thinner).

Saturated copper sulphate solution, piece of copper pipe to +ve, kydex to -ve.

Run for 3 days at about 30-50mA, using a bang-good voltage/current regulator powered from a PC power supply.

Not perfect, but this is more a "proof of concept" than anything else.
