Got enough tool holders!!

I’ve got about 8 holders and don’t tend to use many more than that. I do need to get some HSS tools ground up though.

Must be nice, especially if you had a DRO a with offsets in memory for each of them. One day...

Today I replaced my lathe tool holder storage thing with something that gives me a bit more floor space.

This is what it used to look like (OSB sheet, pine frame, nails to hold the tool holders in place):

This is what it looks like now. Still the same bits of OSB, but with some cedar blocks to hold the tool holders a bit more snuggly (I used cedar just because I've got loads of it).

I made those little holder blocks in long strips and got a bit carried away, so I've got 18 of them left with nowhere to put them and no tools to mount. I either need to make a LOT more tool holders and mount them on the other side of the OSB or just chuck them on the fire! There are about 6 empty slots so I've got room for more tool holders already. Not sure even I can argue that I need another 24 tool holders!

Consider your idea stolen once il get/make a lathe
The solution for the other side would be tailstock tooling holders

Interested what tool did you cut the dovetail with? When I looked router dovetails were the wrong angle.

The dovetail was cut with a table saw. It doesn't have to be especially accurate - as long as the tool holder doesn't fall off! That helps as it saves a lot of time making sure the table saw is exactly right - close enough is plenty good enough.

They really don't take much time/effort to make. I made them all out of a piece of cedar that I ripped into three pieces, 30 mm × 55 mm ish if memory serves me correctly (mainly dictated by the size of the raw stock). Each piece was a bit over a metre long. Two angled cuts and two straight cuts later and I had the fledgling strips ready to be cut into 50 mm long sections. Probably took me about 1/2 hour to make the whole lot (but a lot longer to get them all mounted on the OSB!)

They aren't the strongest things in the world (the screws that hold them to the OSB go into the end grain of the cedar and I broke a few by not drilling the pilot hole deep enough ), but I think they do the job just fine. Would have been better to make them out of load of acetal or nylon bar or similar, but I didn't have any in an appropriate size and length and I'm always shocked by how expensive engineering plastics are.

You can never have too many tool holders. I like to leave tools set up in the tool holder pretty much permanently. It always upsets me when I have to take a tool out of a set-up tool holder because I need to put in a newly ground HSS tool and I have no free holders!

I keep thinking about buying another long length of 75 × 50 mm steel and making another batch. I just have too many other jobs on the job list at the moment and it's really not the most enjoyable job in the world (especially on my weedy little mini-mill).

Would this count as an obsession? I don't seem to have a pic of the holders for the manual lathe, probably because they are just on a shelf but must have about 30 of them Probably going to go and draw up a model tonight to hold them as it has been bugging me for a while. I used to have them all neatly arranged on the shelf then had a friend use my lathe while we were doing a big job and all the holders were put back in a muddled state and have stayed that way since.

I am really not trying enough!! I have 5 tool holders and around 40 collets (ER25, ER32 & W25) must try harder

Is it definitely DA200 you are after? Reason I ask is on my rack I welded the top in upside down many moons ago and couldn't be ersed altering it.
So this is what they actually are.

Yeah tiny little things about an 1” or 1-¼” long and around ½” or ⅜” in diameter.

Go up to about 10mm bore. Most have Kennametal or Pfander? laser etched on them. Some say 200 others say DK20.

Shame, you are out of luck, I only have one 40 taper holder for them, have quite a few 180's I think.

I’m bidding on a few on eBay. I’ve got two 30 taper holders.

do you still have the files for the collet rack?

Don't even know if I had a file for it, it was probably 10 years ago I made it so no plasma then and would have milled it. I probably just used the hole or pocket wizard in Mach and then offset for each new one.
I will have a look though.

Just looked and I don't, I must have just done as I said above. I know I had a load of 100mm wide 10mm thick flat bar left over and just milled it out and welded to the 3"x 3" x 1/4" angle.

I'm always shocked by how expensive engineering plastics are.

They are, its cheaper to use aluminium.
I was doing some stuff with abs today and thought Id try that for tool holders as its quick to do. Glued one up but I have 9 more cut, used half a sheet, about £2 worth.

Trimmed battery adaptors, they are now a good fit.

Needs some trim to finish it off, but at least I can't just keep dumping stuff in there now.



It's a quirky corner. That white, plastered over piece at the front is a stone lintel running across the corner of the room. I'll be getting the plaster back off that sometime in the future, & removing the layer of breeze someone has blocked it off with underneath, (non-supporting).
