Today i repaired some rusted-out hinges in my Sprinter's dropside body.

Ground out the old welds and remnant of broken hinge. (I plasma cut out the rest after remembering how slow the grinding is.)



Did some questionable welding to attach the new hinge and fill the horrendous gap left by grinding:



Then removed the evidence of my excessive weld build-up:



Then i made some brackets from box section. Just out of boredom and playing with the plasma cutter. After deburring them i sat at my workbench staring at them wondering what to do with my life.

No photos because I wasn't expecting to post, but seen as I had a thread notice popup for this thread, I may as well add my addition.

Some time ago I purchased a platform truck for my rather heavy welder to sit on - initiated because one of the machines casters broke. It as largely worked well for what I bought it for, but the power cable for the welder, which is fixed into the machine just drapes on top of the machine when not in use; I've been concerned it is liable to get knocked off and run over by a bike, car or pulled by the dog or just run over by the platform trolley when I'm moving it.

So today's project was to cut up a piece of angle which I had planned to weld onto the top of the platform trucks handle and upon which I will bolt hooks to hold the power cable for my welding machine, maybe a MIG hose and other bits I expect to move around with the welder. Looking at the platform truck I felt the handle sat a little low for any welding cables to hang neatly off, so my solution was to cut up 2 20" pieces of angle, welding one at each side of the vertical portion of the platform trucks frame in such a fashion so a portion of each piece was sticking a number of inches above the level of the existing handle and forward of it. These pieces were then joined at the top with another piece of angle with the flat face on top and facing towards the front of the trolley where my welding machine sits.

Once painted - picked paint up on way home today, as didn't expect to get this far in the process today, I will be fabricating some hooks, probably out of flat bar stock which I plan to bolt onto the top piece of the frame I have welded today. In this manner the hooks which protrude above the load bearing surface of the platform trolley can be removed and will therefore not impede the platform trolley from folding up again should I need to transport it by car.

If I think on next time I'm working on this I'll get a few pictures. I'm still having problems always identifying what I'm doing through the welding lens and have had to rely on feel and a bit of guess work really, but I expect that to improve when I pick up a gas cylinder and stop using flux core wire; although on the whole, for the first time sticking metal together, I was very happy with what I got done.

Aye, it wasn't a great job either as I was replacing a donkey engine that is stuffed into a tiny compartment at the side of a wheelhouse, took me 2 hours to get one of the nuts, holding it down, undone.

You know the problem with more storage hooks? You'll find more stuff to hang on them! I did this with my cylinder trolleys, and still have stuff hung off the damn handles! It never ends..

Familiar with that kind of thing, a friend and i used to have a workshop where 90% of our work was reject jobs from other garages. Lots of swearing trying to reach impossible bolts!

I needed to make some new candles that would be hidden in plain sight, using a mug as a candle holder, so I needed a container to go inside the mug to hold the wax for the candle..... so after looking about for suitable containers I decided to make my own from 0.9mm zintec.

this was rolled around a peice of bar and then tig welded along the seam. the end plates were then tacked in place before seam welding with tig

they were then painted with high temperature paint.

and as for candles, they're not too hard to make, and I started doing it by accident, by recycling used scented candles from the industrial museum that I volunteer at, but they didnt really have the correct smell for the mackintosh section which I end up working in (yes thats me below)

to melt the wax I use a jug in a pan of water and use soya wax flakes

and mix the scents to get the smell I want using a 10% scented oil in the candles

the when the wax temperature drops to 80C I then slowly add the scent while mixing it

when the temerature drops to 60C I'll then pour the wax into the container

and testing with 3 different wicks

think I'll go for the one on the left as the was pool is the best for the size of the container, so I'll melt the other two down and recycle them and use the same wick as the one on the left.

its machintosh week every week at the museum as Halifax is the home of Quality Street and from about 1m 45 seconds in this video by nestle, is gives a very brief introduction to the Industrial Musuem. also shown in this video is Shibden Hall, which is the home to Gentleman Jack off the TV series, and since that has been on tv, visitor numbers to shibden hall have increased by 700%

Nestle are good to the museum as they supply us with wrappers for the sweet wrapping machine (which is was made in 1933) an engineer to keep the wrapping machine running and free sweets to hand out.

the wrapping machine is one of the main attractions of the industrial museum, and for you guys who like mechanical things here is the same machine showing how they work, but its a younger machine just being made in 1958.

The double twist wrapping that these machines do was invented for Machintosh's as originally the sweets were wrapped by hand.

Had an hour before I headed home so shoved a bit of 10mm steel on the plasma and cut out the plate, I then put it in the Chiron and milled out the hole a bit more and cut a pocked 2mm deep to locate the box section.

I clocked the box level in the vice and trued up each end with a long length 20mm dia carbide cutter.

I the pressed it into the pocket in the plate.

Then a quick zip round with the tig. Tomorrow I will see how much distortion there is

Just out of interest, could it not have been surface mounted as opposed to having the 2mm pocket?

2mm pocket was purely for location purposes so that when I weld on the bearing housings on either end they will hopefully be fairly close.
I will still probably final bore the outer bearing seat on the lathe after chucking the thing up in soft jaws.

I don't get much time to stick metal together these days .

Found a glass table by the bin and repurposed some rusty fence poles. We now have a patio table.

Not happy i had to buy some washers and bolts so it set me back €3.50

Today I installed my first extraction system for some time and put a curtain rail up for a client’s new welding bay.
The kit all went together as it should with the fitting kit containing all the necessary bits and as the client was a plant rental firm they had plenty of powered access equipment on hand which really helps.

Plenty more of these to do over the next few weeks and months before the fume bubble bursts. Make hay while the sun shines etc. I’ll be glad to get back to normal selling welders. Sweating ones nadgers off up a ladder in a roof-space is not my idea of a great time...

Bit more progress this afternoon.
Turned the inner bearing seat.

Pressed it into the plate and then welded.

Whilst it was cooling I turned the outer bearing housing.

Parted it off and flipped it over to face but didn't bore out the bearing recess at this point.

Pressed that into the box and welded.

Whilst that was cooling I did a quick repair to a trowel for a friend. Put it outside on the anvil to cool down and the rain came on so probably cooled a bit quicker than it should

Next job was to chuck in the soft jaws and bore out the outer bearing seat, it was surprisingly true, only 0.05mm out but still best boring out this way as now it is spot on.

Flipped over and faced off the other side. I thought it would have warped more than it did, had to take 0.3mm off to get it flat.

Put it into the Chiron and milled out the hole to get the prox trigger part in when assembling then flipped and bored the 4 holes for the Prox switches.

Next up I fitted the bearings and slid the shaft in .

Did a test fit on the turret, unclamped the turret and rotated and no movement at all so everything seems to be perfectly alighned.
