I got a control handle in to repair.

I was going to vee it right out, fully weld then bore/tap but when I took it apart it had a helicoil in so I wondered if I could just weld it the way it was. Vee'd it out a bit and clamped to a chunk of steel.

Filled it up with weld.

Ground flush and it seems to be doing its job.

Next up was a steel hauler knife, both sides worn, normally I would tig but decided to give the wee stick welder a go on pulse and see how it performed.

Seemed to be fine so after 5 or 6 2.5mm rods I ground it down.

Repeated on the other side.

Job done, not sure if it was much quicker but I was wanting some messing around with the pulse function as I haven't had much chance to use it since I got it earlier this year.

An update on my earlier post in this thread for anyone that's interested, as the saying goes - no plan survives first contact with the enemy....
Had to make one modification at work, I'll do another one, not as essential as the first, just a bit of fine tuning.

Here you can see the cable (in the orange sleeving) disappearing along the side of the gearbox, just for context.

Propshaft disconnected, moved to the side of the transmission tunnel & gearbox lowered, the cable disappears under the black shroud, the gearbox is about 820mm long.
Second pic is with shroud removed to expose the connector.

Pushing the replacement plug into the socket, I use the camera on my phone to illuminate and observe as it's slim and small enough to see what's happening without getting in the way, it does mean I'm operating one-handed though.

All good, seemed to come to a hard stop which meant the plug was fully inserted.

Except it wasn't....
The gearbox casting has a hump in it, causing the shoe to bind on it, there is no flex in the pins or socket so it won't ride over it. Closer view below.

Out came the die grinder and a Dremel to re-profile and clean, worked a treat.

All that's left to do is slice a 10degree piece out of the box section about 200mm down from the 'business end' to tilt the head down and make it easier to insert the cable with the tool already in situ.
I'm a bit concerned that the re-profiled lower 'legs' may be a bit fragile, I may end up re-making it in steel.

Not worth the hassle @Hood. They crack over time due to corrosion, the insert is there to give some strength and particularly to stop the clamping alan bolt from getting seized in by the corroding alli. I just keep spares and change them out when they break. I don't know from your end but here they have trippled in price over the last 10 or so years. They are nice when they work and on ,most parts they are very reliable, but when then give trouble . On commercial boats I change out the fluid every two years, this stops the jelly forming and blocking the schroder valves. Just my two cents worth

There are only two boats here that have that system, Both Cleopatra boats made in Iceland. I don't do any work on them, except fabrication/welding/machining etc, I leave the marine engineering to the other guys

A bit more of the garage/workshop storage saga for me today.
This set of shelves (had them since I was about 11 )



used to be here, with bikes hanging on the wall above them. The bikes went earlier this year (not ridden for 15 years or more) so space above them became available.
In their place I built this strikingly beautiful piece of craftsmanship. With a view to mounting the shelves on top of it, with a few screws into the wall for good measure.



Which allows me to move the compressor from under the work bench.



Creating space for me to fill with stuff from my massive welding trolley, which is too big, takes up too much space and cannot be moved more than about 2ft in any direction anyway.
