Have you *seen* the price of decent timber at the moment?
- cheapest 2nd hand scaff boards are 1.50 a foot round here

just the (rough as anything) ply sheets, and roof beams, cost the best part of £400!!!

I keep wondering and sketching out whether it's possible to construct decent length lattice beams made up of short lengths of pallet wood. For things like sheds and workshops.

I reckon you could knock up an I Joist, main problem with pallets is they are fairly short, even the ones for sheet material ~2.4M

I did an experiment a few years ago: three layers of 12mm pallet wood glued together in staggered joins to make lengths. X-pieces of the same stuff mortised between two lengths.

I decided it was easier/faster/better to buy 13ft scaff boards, and bolt/glue them together

woodworking question - scarf joint.

I went with straight beams at 6.3m, and used bolts, connector washers, and gorilla glue. to get the extra slope, I supported one end on a piece of 3x2, again bolted and glued. the other picture shows the amount of bow In the roof.

The neighbour?

No! They are the best neighbours I have ever had. Get on really well with them - the scene was set when I was still moving in quite late in the evening on the day of exchange, struggling with some ungainly item of car/machine tool/usefull object I couldn't possibly throw away, when David came back from a full day, half the previous night, probably looking forward to most of the next night of looking after sheep, doing a milk round, etc, hopped over the fence to give me a hand without asking, or indeed being introduced at that point. Their three grown up kids continuously drop in, their grandkids - all know my name, what I do, all willing to chat, no-one parks across my drive, all willing to help in any way. You know they are all right then one grand-daughter, driving shiny newish Golf with even shinier big wheels on, reverses/drives as required to drive on/off the pavement (no other way to park as narrow road) to avoid smacking the wheels/tyres up and down the kerb.

But maybe woodwork is done in a farmer type way - quick and it'll do

Initial sticking didnt go to plan. Some clearance and melted the far side.

On centre, but you can see I cocked up drilling the angled screw hole. The hole may need to be redone.

Ages ago I tried brazing a parting insert onto a section of tube, before I had the tig. Put a shank on it and will try sometime soon.

I've done them with a 10mm shoulder, where they're passing through the lower handle, rather than having them just a 8mm thread all way along, as are the originals.

It's one of those scissor type, which the likes of Chronos & RDG sell.



That one is missing its spring between the jaws. I use that one though as it fits in the toolholder, merely as someone's ground the shank height down. The missing spring doesn't affect its functionality. I do have a complete one too, but the shanks too tall for the Norman toolpost. The one above came with one of my lathes.

Myford ML7 with a QCTP - accepts up to 12mm shanks at most iirc.

TBH I'm dreading looking, need about 40sq m of OSB to redo my garage roof plus a load of 2x1 roofing batten, not looking forward to paying for that lot!

word is that prices will drop late next summer (12-15 months)

theres a reclamation yard near here that do (rough as fk) 8x4 sheets for a tenner apiece, still. gaffer was saying price is likely to hit 20 a sheet; but lots of new sites starting up (they use the 8x4 sheets as fencing, so when theyre stripped down they end up piled up in the yard) on jobs due to finish august time next year

The roller skate with a Citroen DS Safari on top. Used it to pull the car from the garage, turn it around and push it back in. I've done the sills on one side, turned it around so I can do the other side.
The sill is nearly 3mm thick where the screwdriver has been poked through. No rust proofing and no seam sealer.

Removed the gear/throttle and donkey engine controls and then chopped the top out of the box and then welded in the drop down section I made on Friday.

Then refitted the longer handled throttle/gear controls and the original donkey engine one.

Also swapped over the outside helm pump to one with a lower volume per turn to hopefully lighten up the steering.
