Yesterday, I produced this..... a 'prototype' fly cutter, just got the HSS cutter to form into a proper rake/angle. It may or may not do the job, but it cost nothing and was worth a go



Then a torch rest for the MIG which will need clamping to the bench, but again, an old box spanner and a bit of scrap plate, what's to lose..... No pic of this as I'm sure you all know what a combo of those would look like.

Thanks, Brad. It's just an experiment really. I have a lump of round bar of indeterminate quality and might try to copy the more common type you get from Banggood etc. They don't really cost a lot so might just end up sending money East....

A good type to copy is the SubUrban Tool flycutter.

I'm finding that route preferable quite a few times. Making something not readily obtainable, or not in a form you want, is good, but readily available, relatively cheap items, buying seems to win hands down, lately.

A good type to copy is the SubUrban Tool flycutter.

Looks like a shell mill getting close up and personal with a boring bar. I suspect they will need a substantial machine to get the best out of them.

It’s just about mass, you can use as small a boring bar or carbide insert as you like.

Got some more pics? Mine's still sat in the box tbh.

Here are some pics of my bandsaw frame build. I used what was to hand at the time, 30x30x3mm box section, 25x8mm flat bar, 10mm threaded rod.

External dimensions are 560x260mm. The handle is held by a 10mm rod passed through it and secured with R clips. There are some mouldings inside the handle that limit the diameter of rod you can use.
The side clamps are 10mm threaded rod with rubber buffers. They bear against the motor housing below the brushes.

There are two cap screws in the motor housing which rest against the back bar.

The table is 200x200x6mm mild steel. I slid the workpiece stop right forward to provide enough support to enable me to cut the blade slot with the saw. The workpiece stop was then removed and the table fixed in place using the original screws.

The trigger does not have a lock button so needs to be clamped down. This is not safe for the user so I plan to fit a foot switch.

I used PLA for this case whole PETG is a stronger material it's less rigid and we don't want flex in these parts.

In terms of strength I went for 5mm outer wall so 7 perimeters with an infill of 75%

Maintenance day today.
Drained plasma table and cleaned out the dross, filter works well

Replaced the bearings on 10 collet chucks for the Chiron, have another 27 that are not too bad but will likely buy some more bearings and do them at some point.

Once I cleaned the plasma and pumped the water back in I cut a couple of bits of 3mm stainless and made some hose brackets.

An indexing pin for the Drummond almost.


Almost because I fell at the last hurdle, silver soldering the 1/8" cross arm on the locking screw, all I ended up doing was blackening it. I will clean it up tomorrow and have a re think.
The one I made is described as the Myford ML7 one on the left which is identical to the Drummond one on the right, except no removable 'distance piece' which I don't think will be required, if it is it can be quickly turned down in a collet so not a problem.

What are the bearings for? Looks like a normal iso40 taper type spindle? Im guessing its for a tool changer?

They are 30 taper and yes it is because of the basket toolchanger on the Chiron.

That would get it sorted and out of the way quickly, I will probably just clean it up and use super glue.
