So this morning I started sharpening the knife , it's a long procedure ,I have a 50mm spot on the blade where the edge is flat .
I have to grind down maybe 0.1 or 0.2mm yet.
After that I'll polish the blade firstly using the sharpening stone and eventually the polishing paste (which should be 8000 grit)

Got the plasma cutter out this evening and cut up some aluminium sheet:

(the stripes are just an effect of having bare LED strips lighting the workshop, nothing to do with the finish on the aluminium).

Not very interesting, just decided it was about time I did a bit more TIG practice. I'd been hoping to ask for someone on the forum to offer some 1:1 tuition as I'm a great believer in "practice makes permanent" - i.e. that if you keep practising but doing it wrong, you can get very consistent at doing it wrong, with lots of bad habits that will be hard to break. 1:1 tuition isn't going to happen anytime soon for obvious reasons, so I'll just practice and try to be hyper-self-critical.

Made a LOT of blue swarf today. Prototyping and learned that nylon is an XXXXX to work with (I remembered as soon as I started, poor memory). Then some red and blue Acetal then some Nylatron. If you have never prototyped before, what it means is, you start with a load of useful material and turn it into scrap. Spend a lot of time doing it and learn some new words along the way. Ended up with a couple of possibilities though so not a total loss

managed to sort out a tool to fit the lathe today so got a piece of stock down to the right size for making some needle holders for the needle gun up at the railway workshop,
not much i know but it was good to use the lathe again.

Pretty sure what you've actually made there is some miniature Ford XR2 wheels.

Right now, doing ANYTHING that move you one step forwards is a result I feel. You have done more than a great many people, congratulate yourself. Maybe you will do a bit more tomorrow. Like the man said, every day is a school day.

I improved some workzone callipers. My vertical slide DRO gave me some annoying wrist cuts from reaching past it, so cut the points off!

After grinding, I took one apart. The amount of dirt inside I think grinding actually cleaned it. The copper shim pinged off somewhere else. I retapped the stripped lock screw m4 for a grub screw and a new copper shim. Not decided where to drill tailstock body but made up a mount for the barrel.

Last week won some Sandvik 4mm parting inserts. I dont have a tool for them, plan to braze onto tube for deep trepaning cutters and grind clearance after brazing. This one will be 50mm

I wouldn't bother with those, they will fail, both of mine did.

Ground down a 60 degree insert screw. What do others use when need a flush screw in thin metal?

Drilling those holes! Mistook my hss co stub drills for the carbide, which then chipped as it went through. As with the 60 degree countersink all need regrinding after Ive had lunch. 6mm carbide burr got it done. Next a short peice to attach barrel mount to slidey bit

... a very dirty welder clean, Long overdue a wipe down. Crimped on a terminal to the torch lead too, been on the to do list for about 18 months. As a side note is there any correlation between the serial number and year of manufacture, for example would this one be 1972?

In a previous life, this was the center of a cbr6 flywheel/generator rotor.

Now just a crude pin socket
