Today I reminded myself why I don't make stuff in titanium as a rule. It knocks hell out of the machines, the swarf is razor sharp, it lights up once in a while and scares you silly, it breaks inserts and destroys drills. Finishes well though.

I am making everything in titanium or carbon fibre or ally. So far I have taken 185 grams out of it. It is a semi auto pistol.

I'm trying to make a knife .
It will never be a good knife since I'm making it using mild steel, and will never be pretty because I'm working with angle grinder , cordless drill and welder only .
But it will probably be enough good to see .
The Idea is make a souvenir from covid time.
In the future might be priceless tell to a son or daughter "I made this thing while we were in lockdown" later I'll probably upload some pictures
But it is not pretty as the ones you usually see around

Today I did a (fairly) thorough tidy-up of the garage.

That's the first time in ages it's been tidy enough that I've thought it reasonable to update the "My Workshop" page on my website! There's still a fair amount of clutter that doesn't have a home, but it's a LOT better than it was.

I even cleaned the swarf out of the inside of the machine vice, which involved taking it to pieces (which I quite enjoyed to be honest, it was interesting to understand the ball mechanism that pulls the moving jaw down onto the base to stop jaw lift). The strip-down was a needed: the leadscrew was getting quite hard to turn if you opened it too far. I ended up using an HSS lathe internal threading tool by hand to scrape the swarf out of the thread.

As you have identified, these are for competition use. The Practical shooting guys want them to be as light as possible. So far I have managed to get 145 grams out of the barrel and 65 grams out of the barrel shroud but then I have added 25 with the new magwell base. I will take a pic when I get it back together, sometime tomorrow.

Most of the Practical guys use Smith and Wesson M&P 15/22 rifles because they are very light and when you are carrying it all day in competition any gun gets heavy. The snag with both the M&P and this GSG pistol I am modifying is they are both made down to a price. So you have to buy the gun then throw an equivalent amount of money at it to make it reliable AND fast. What I am trying to do is get a gun together that works reliably "off the shelf" if you like and save the whole hassle of experimenting until it is right. You can just buy the finished, competition ready item from me and be competitive right away. If I make them in batches it will get the price down. Right now, this is for a good customer but I am not really charging the going rate as I have told him I am prototyping some of the modifications. This is my umpteenth attempt at "the best". We will see.

The accurizing kit and magwell extension are done by a friend of mine. I do barrels really. I have w̶a̶s̶t̶e̶d̶ invested a good amount of time understanding barrels so I tend to turn out barrels that are accurate. An odd thing to learn about to be honest.

After trying to order a bed frame a few weeks ago and not finding anything i like due to wanting a size known as a small double (1200mm x 1900mm) i decided to make one now i have the spare time, Due to me being a hoarder i have lots of old new and used timber so the basic frame is now done and i am just waiting for some wood inserts to arrive, Ikea have quoted 5 weeks delivery time for the mattress so i have a bit of time to decide on a finish

Not all today but in preparation for zombie apocalypse thought we better start growing our own veg.

So out with the bamboo patch, which naturally meant I had to borrow next doors mini digger


Ripped apart a pile of pallets from next door (the other side) to make a 2m x 4m raised bed frame



Then filled with about 4 1/2 tonnes of compost from the bins at the end of the garden clearing out about 10 years accumulation


Now we can plant some seedlings - yay

Bastardised a Hardi backpack sprayer, quad sprayer, 6v battery and a sack trolley to mobilise for weed spraying.

Why? Well both shoulder straps are unusable and replacements for this model cannot be got. Works a treat. All can be dismantled to allow for the use of the sack trolley for other use. View attachment 220213
