On the back of my job lot of spanners post a while back, they've now been through caustic soda and citric baths.
I thought I'd run a few past the wire brush in the bench grinder and was pleasantly surprised - we like shiney things, right?

Could be some treasures among them, e.g a couple stamped Snail brand - one has sizes at each end and oddly the other just has the number 15821 at one end . I've never seen that done before on a spanner. Pics don't really do the outcome justice.





I'll not be stuck for something to do on wet, windy days........

You may find that spanner would of been part of "A kit to maintain" a peace of machinery history.

The Zerox tool kit, the spanners and sockets did not have a size, just a number.

As I was off the road today. I managed to get this lot taken to a place what buys jewerly.

A lot was pretty, but worthless.
But not all.

Sold the lot for £15.

Today has followed the pattern of the week.

But we have achieved a few jobs.

8 days ago I managed to get this old Brass Guide Mitre box.



It looked solid and felt heavy. When I got it home, I noticed 2 wood worm holes. I have seen worse and tapping it showed it was solid and no hollow sounds.



Dismantling showed that the worm was worse than I guessed. The upper one (the base) was salvageable by planning the damaged wood away. The lower one (one side) was not.
I have other dead Mitre guides and one yielded a replace meant side, saved from the base of a dead box. It needed trimming down in thickness and using the old as a guide the slots were cut. First with a Tenon saw, then with a hacksaw with 3 blades in, to give me the width of the guide.




The replacement is the one on the far left, stained with a mix of rust, tea and coffee. There is now exact measurement of the mixture. Just trail and error.

The metal work, apart from the screws, was removed and polished.



A "Bodge and quit" polishing mop was thrown together.

Finished, waxed and assembled with brass screws.

Today.
Has improved and I am almost clamed down from last week.



This box of Metric weights.

The box fell apart, the old animal glue has dried out and when I was cleaning it, the cracks spread and I was left with matchwood.



The weights, a interesting step through time. The picture does not show the details on the head. The "Gramm" stamps over stamped what looks like "OZ" markings. The base show signs of machining.
I guess they were "Converted" from imperial to metric at some point. They have been done very well. All with in 5% of the indicated mark. I warmed them in a bowl of hot water, using my Beatrice No.33 And weighed them on 3 scales. Mrs TYA was out shopping.



The box re-glued and the felt linings cleaned. Clear 2 pack glue was used after the old glue was removed, for the simple reason of a quicker curing time. Plus Animal glue stinks.




Not much needed doing to her, she just had light surface rust and a gummed up filler cap.



Original wick and still within 1/16 of the length from new.





One of the 2 set backs today was the paint on the Wold Drill lathe.



The etch primmer reacted with the original paint. But.



We got there.

The other set back was the steel in the Carving chisels I got.

Muckite, Monkey metal.

What I can read of the label it looks like laboratory weights.

I have GPO weights, the neck is different.

The GPO style weights have a neck shaped to make picking them up with fingers.

The Lab. style ones are designed to be picked up using tweezers, or similar. As in a Lab accuracy is more important than in a Post office.

A Mess, but some space.

The Cedar wood I got yesterday will be converted into Charcoal. The rest will be brunt, quickly, due to worm.

So what did I make.


A hot fire. Used to melt the alloy from the scrap engine parts.



You can see the metal running out.

Made a slide hammer. Internal M5 thread on one end plus external M12 thread and another internal M8 thread on the other side. M5 because that's what's used on the Deckel I was removing blind tapered pins from (pre-made with M5 threads for removal). Figured an M12 thread would be good thread in order to fasten various things as need arises. And with an M12 nut on it works as a stop. The other side got an M8 thread because that's what's used in in vice grips (on the ones I got), so I can attach a vice grip.

I made a mess of a Beats Pill...


It was drowned in beer a few years ago and hasn't worked since so I'm told. I was expecting the battery to have dropped below 3 volts and the charger to be ignoring it but it was sat at 3.75v. Just out of curiosity I pressed the power button with it all in bits and it came on so plugged my phone in and it works just fine, didn't to a thing to it other than open it up and it magically works again.

On nyc cnc they made a 32 collet holder for pulling locating pins.

The Snail's are a good, chunky spanner.

I don't know, I suspect it's supposed to be IP-64/65 (There's gaskets around the seams and behind the buttons, they've clearly considered water getting in) but the drivers just clip in and three had been dislodged which would let water in. It's clearly had a hard life.

I've got a UE Roll which is IP67 and "Impact rated" (It survived getting slung down the stairs. ) which sounds better imo, not to mention half the price.

I've never been impressed with the beets sound quality off my head phones that ended up going back as my 30£ ones sounded better than a 400£ pair of them
