Good to see someone else using a shaper. One of the most useful machine tools. Shame so many of them were scrapped when everyone wanted to use just milling machines. Don't see many around these days.

Nothing special, just a wooden chair.
What you can't see are the brass dowels and brass sleeves what replaced the failed wooden ones.
The man you turned them down for me was well know in my town as a grumpy missable person. I got to know him and found out he was a keen machinist who had fallen on bad times, bad luck. Sadly he passed away in the first week of January. This is the last project I was working on with him. It is now complete, were it goes now, depends on his family.
There are 3 bits of new wood in the rebuild, any one spot them?
The off cuts are being turned into wooden Lilliput cottages. In this case, in paint, 2 cottages and a light house.

1" BSPT on the outside and 1/4" BSPP inside, its for a water drain tap on a Lister D.

I offset the tailstock behind center and turned it between centers to get the taper. The original plan was to just drill and tap a 1" iron stop plug but I couldn't think how to hold it in the chuck to drill it (Can't fit a 12mm drill in my pillar drill) so I went for the easier option.
The ends of the threads need dressing with a small file but I'll leave that for my dad when he fits it.
More by luck than judgement, it's just about perfect.

A lot went to india and Pakistan. I didn't use the shaper out of nostalgia , it was the quickest and easiest way to cut a 87 degree vee in a gnarly old piece of toolsteel.

I made some holes disappear on my Pajero.
Rough shape on the bench but most of it was beaten in to shape on the vehicle. Had to stop every 15 minutes to let the CO2 cylinder and regulator thaw out a little.

Cobbled together a carbide grinder/sharpener for scraping inserts.
Later I think I will make a real, adjustable table for it and other refinements, for now this will do. Have 1000, 1500 and 3000 grit diamond plates.
The rotor was removed and the diameter turned down on the lathe so the diamond plates would fit.

The one I have just got is a SZGH CNC1000TDC-2
It is a 2 axis lathe control but they do Mill controls which are basically the same setup just different software.
Output is Step/Dir so would require you update the servo drives as I would presume the Matsura would be analogue.
I have Mach3 with a CSMIO/IP-A control on the Chiron and it is analogue output.

I was going to be building myself a small travel heavy duty lathe at one time, got some heavy duty linear guides for it at the same time as I got a turret for the present lathe but never got it done and it is not going to happen now

It is supposed to have it although until I get it hooked up I won't know for sure how well it works. My lathe only has an induction motor on it, I did fit a servo a while back but have gone through a few drives so when the 3rd one died at the back end of last year I decided to just go back to the original setup but with a VFD controlling the motor. I suppose technically mine won't be rigid tapping as depth can't be exactly controlled but with a servo spindle it could be, the Chiron has a servo and it can do rigid tapping with Mach3 and the CSMIO/IP-A.

not exactly made today, but its the first time Ive assembled all the parts for the Triumph Heralds dashboard together, I've done bits and pieces on it for the last 10 to 15 years or so.
I wanted something that looks like it could have left the factory that way, so these are the bits that have been tweaked.
1) matching speedometer and rev counter from a Austin Healey Sprite, with the original mechanism of the speedometer from my herald being fitted, the circuity for the rev counter has been replaced as it doesnt work with electronic ignition.
2) matching smith fuel, coolant temp, oil temp and oil pressure gauges with matching senders, not sure which cars the gauges originally came from.
3) 2 speed and intermittant windscreen wipers with electric wash pump (single speed manual pump as standard) using the wiper relay of a mk2 vw polo.
4) 3 speed heater and rear demister (single speed heater as standard)
5)rear fog light and headlight flasher that turns the diped beam off when flashed (as standard the dipped beam stays on when the mian beam is flashed)
6) Hazard light switch, think it came out of a Triumph 2500 (well its an old British car so they may well be required)
7) Cat 2 imobilizer, still prefer the diskloc though, as a standard car can be stolen with a 2ft length of wire
8)Triumph TR6 knobs so that the knobs in the centre of the dash now match.
as they say, the devil is in the detail.
and testing the wiring for the windscreen wipers
and the lighting to flash the headlights (turn the dipped beam off when the main beam is flashed, as standard the dipped beam stays on) and to fit a rear fog light without fitting any extra switches.
and the imobiliser with the flashing led to show its working being fitted into the rev counter

Plasma cut a rusty old bit of 20mm plate and then turned it to make a rudder flange, then onto the Chiron and milled 4 holes at 4" PCD then welded it to the shaft. Rods were old horrible siftrodes and gave me a load of spatter but they were all I had
Next I started welding up the rudder that I had previously plasma cut.
Then cut a slice of some 7" dia stainless and again turned and milled it then welded to the shaft I had previously turned on the CNC the other week.
I like stainless stick welding much better than steel.
Then to the lathe to turn the OD, true the face and finish size the register.
Also had to make a couple of Acetal bushes.
Finished parts with the old ones from the other side of the boat.
