Back in the early 90's I'd be sent to building sites all over the South East. Easy for London just use the A-Z but for outside London I'd have the address so I'd find the town in the AA road atlas, drive there then hope to spot a postman or milkman to get directions to a particular road. If that didn't work it would be petrol station for a local map. I ended up with a pile of 15 or 20 of those in the front of the van.
People born after the millennium don't know how easy they have it. We had to work hard and remember stuff back then.
Back in the 80's/90's when I did rally rescue/recovery we would be given a 6 digit OS map reference, usually a forest commission road in the middle of a forest and told to be there by xx time, I got quite good at map reading
