Back in the early 90's I'd be sent to building sites all over the South East. Easy for London just use the A-Z but for outside London I'd have the address so I'd find the town in the AA road atlas, drive there then hope to spot a postman or milkman to get directions to a particular road. If that didn't work it would be petrol station for a local map. I ended up with a pile of 15 or 20 of those in the front of the van.

People born after the millennium don't know how easy they have it. We had to work hard and remember stuff back then.

Back in the 80's/90's when I did rally rescue/recovery we would be given a 6 digit OS map reference, usually a forest commission road in the middle of a forest and told to be there by xx time, I got quite good at map reading

If you are hoping to ditch maps and use gps or satnav in Ireland I'm afraid you will get lost.

There are still parts that have not been mapped properly by Google maps or the maps are out of date. Nobody uses the postcode system in ROI so often the satnav can't find an address.

I have travelled all over this country and if I had relied solely on satnav I'd be lost somewhere in rural Ireland!

So keep your map handy!

Decided I wasn't keen on the blueish anodising so popped it in the etch solution to remove the anodising the redid but kept it in the dye longer so it came out black. Re-lasered the text and happy with the results.

I've only just chucked my slightly smaller collection of A-Zs. And a couple of US equivalents.

I still have my RandMcnally of the US - but I only remember about it when I'm in a rental with no installed GPS and my phone . . .

Apart from a collection of rural town street maps, I found that nipping into the first cop shop I'd usually find a large scale map pinned to the wall in the reception area.

My late dad used to drive a lorry. Ask him for directions anywhere and he would know, and tell you where to turn left, right etc. I would be going over this in my head, in the fruitless belief I would remember some of it. He would then proceed to give me another one or more ways to get there!

I think that’s true of most people of a certain age - I travel a fair bit with my job and whenever I go somewhere it’s guaranteed that I get interrogated by the father in law about which way I went, alternative routes and which way I should have gone

Looks amazing! Just needs a knobsock now for waterproofing. I just checked my switches box and I don't have any that size, else I would have sent you one.

The problem being most of my dad's route instructions were pre-motorway. And even if they did include one, they tended to divert off as the earliest opportunity.

AA map books, Dad would get one every year, even I did when I first started driving. A-Z round London. I've lost count of the little red map books I've bought up and down the country. Then it was Auto Route and print off a paper copy. SatNavs next and now built in to the cars but I tend to use Waze now on the phone.

Made a double din conversion for the Merc SLK dashboard as it only ever came with a poxy single din, and needs a better satnav screen etc.
Then, I scanned it in 3d, so I can make more. Along with the rest of the interior plastics. Stuff paying 300 quid for a fragile original clock surroud...
So I've told it now, if it breaks again, I'm finishing my large size 3d printer project quick and Ima just gonna print a new interior for it.

Now got to put it all back in after removing all the zillions of marker spots...
