I made a rootfukker, out of a 6mm leaf spring from @hotponyshoes
Its not ground sharpsharp, but works well enough with an 8kg sledge.

Another day on the roof - I don't know where the time goes, cos I feel progress is glacial.
I managed to replace the rotten wallplate today and also the rafters on the outside of the roof.
I've got the weatherboard bits to fit & one more rafter to replace - but first I need to install a new purlin section under the hip roof for this rafter to site on..... but that's I think pretty much it for the Framing.
This is all pretty much new to me, so after I get the membrane tacked on - I've got to work out the batten layout and slate a roof for the first time.

Made a replacement for this, today.
It's part of the carriage advance mechanism. That plate isn't the original, & I've tried fettling it, but just wasn't happy with it. So, made a new plate & pivot pin/shaft. It's no work of art, but it looks slightly more original, & the new shaft is a better fit in the casting.
Made the shaft a press fit into the plate, so that it only needs nuts fitting on one end now.
You can see in this photo how the previous one looked when fitted, (in an upside-down orientation to how it ought be), & what its purpose is.

I have the same edition. Send it back for a refund as it doesn’t work. I’ve been trying to find my way out of Cornwall for the past 60 years

I have to admit to not knowing how I used to survive without gos. Used to land in foreign lands for work, pick the rental car up and then find the site or hotel. Arrive in Dallas, be handed a map of Texas on an A4 bit of paper at the rental desk . . Got close, needed the boss out in the street waving his arms around to find the right place

Back in the early 90's I'd be sent to building sites all over the South East. Easy for London just use the A-Z but for outside London I'd have the address so I'd find the town in the AA road atlas, drive there then hope to spot a postman or milkman to get directions to a particular road. If that didn't work it would be petrol station for a local map. I ended up with a pile of 15 or 20 of those in the front of the van.
People born after the millennium don't know how easy they have it. We had to work hard and remember stuff back then.
Managed a bit more "roof bothering" today before the rain came in too heavily.
I've fitted a new overlaid Purlin section (the old part was rotten & short... I suspect rainwater has been leaking under the old leadwork for years rotting is away unseen). My "new bit" extends to sit into the RSJ that replaced the wall when the old milking parlour building was extended decades ago - so it's sitting in the "I" beam one end, and bolted through the existing Purlin in the other - so hopefully it's going nowhere (the Purlin also sits recessed into the A-Frame by an inch - so its pretty solid).
The Rafter bottom half was also AWOL altogether (& it looked like there's been some "repairs" done over 30-years-ago which I think ignored this missing rafter section completely).
So, there's now a new 3x2 Rafter tip to bottom, which also supports the timber under the leadwork (which must have just been "floating" unsupported all this time.
I've screwed new Rafters on, but as well today I've gone all over the side I'm working on with my new Clarke Air nailer & fired in some 90mm nails to reinforce any aged & rusting originals. (Air nailer is a hefty beast plus the airline to drag about.... but works an absolute treat!)
So, the framework (barring an infill into the small gap between Rafters on the eaves & the Weatherboard) is now ready for membrane & battens

Being a clueless numpty - I didn't know anything about Headlap and Starter Courses ( Google has been er.... googled) - so I never check what the Headlap is (I can check the other side next time I'm up there though). There's a 45-degree top cut on the Rafters though, so the roof is steep enough to run off well (if I can manage to do it properly).
The old slates though - weren't laid properly - I've worked that much out - cos there were nails through the Head of each slate (which also made getting the old ones off without breakages a time for the "Mission Impossible" soundtrack). So I think I'm going to have to try and work it out from scratch.
I've discovered I need a "Cant" at the bottom to make the slates lie properly, & that the Starter Course and First Course are critical, and need a different Headlap to the rest of the courses.
I think I'm getting a headache!
If I can get the starter & first course sussed.... then after that I think I just need batten spacing to give me at least a 3" Headlap (old gauge was 9", on an 18" Slate... which is I think wrong, as (from researching) an 18" Slate, with a 3" Headlap would be on a 7.5" gauge??).... so I'm wondering now if half the reason the battens were all rotten - is because there wasn't enough overlap on the slates from day 1 - to keep the water out? (I really need to check the other side, cos I am far from sure I'm right with my calcs at this point!).
