Back to woodbothering, something I knocked together in a previous life. One of a pair actually, this is at my Ex's house and the other is here at my house:




Mostly American Cherry with Black Walnut panels, the other has Padauk in the panels. I also made the boxes on top and the lamp which is Pitch Pine, boxes are mostly Cocobolo and Ironwood with a bit of Lignum Vitae. Top of the big box is Ropala Lacewood. When I look around today, the price of exotic hardwoods is just astronomical and there is no quantity, they are all little bits, I have thrown bigger pieces in the scrap bin of those that are offered for sale.

Last weekend I decided to make another box out of American Black Walnut. All hand tools.

There was no reason to make a box: just that I'd been doing a lot of metalwork and turning and I was missing using hand planes and chisels.

The lid is just a slidey thing:

It was nice to try out the new chisel handles I made recently and they felt comfortable to use. I was pleased I could still do mitred-corner dovetails after a few months' break!

Finish is Mike's Magic Mix as usual.

Well, I finished it today, but started it a while back. (Apologies - no metal or welding, but the fretboard, mother of pearl inlays, and bridge were made on my CNC.)

(Rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard & European spruce soundboard. The body finish is French polished shellac, the neck is Tru OIl. Made to the 'OM' plans from here.)

Superb work. Does it sound good as good as it looks?

Thanks! First impressions are that it is surprisingly loud and resonant, but I haven’t set it up well enough to play properly yet. I’m giving it a week or so under string tension then I’ll level the frets and tweak the nut and saddle to get the action right.

Quite a bit needed removing.

Welding happened! The trusty Cebora Turbo 130 was used to glue these together. It does seem to work best on the highest setting.

Be kind I only weld once or twice a year

Just got the adjusters fitted, had to modify the right side slightly as the nuts locking tabs weren't getting full engagement, quick trip to the workshop and milled out a pocket 3mm deep for the washer and all is good.
Makes adjusting the chain a breeze compared to the oem method, so very happy

A DIY adjusting tool for the "tamperproof" mixture adjustment on a mid-90s Nissan, glad I finally found a use for a cheap tin spanner that's been in my junk box for decades


It's typical Nissan - more complicated than it needed to be.
The adjusting needle is protected by the loose disk you can see. Using a normal screwdriver turns the disk but not the needle, the needle also has a central pip to make sure you cant just use a thin flat screwdriver.

Next job: keep a look out for a small wooden handle to go on the other end so it looks exactly like the factory tool

Making a cover for the fan from a scrapped fan.

Cut a strip of thin gauge steel from an old Dexion shelf backplate

Then trim everything, weld it all together, and slap some silver paint to cover everything that's bare metal.

Very retro

No doubt that'll earn me another couple of bottles of Faustino.

I too have the Cebora 130 and I think it's a great piece of kit. had mine donkeys years and its done some pretty heavy duty welding in its time too.

Starting to rebuild my doorstep





It was tiled and was always a disaster with tiles coming loose no matter what exterior grade stuff was used.

So I'm rebuilding it in concrete edge bricks and infill concrete paving for a permanent solution. Many hours work to go yet but will get there.

I was using 3 of them yesterday on it. Not all at once but the TS420 is good for deep cuts and the others have different diamond blades fitted so trying both types.

Today I went out for buying stuff then after lunch ,I've managed to fell asleep for about 3 hours (I'm recovering sleep ,it has been a long and not so great period of my life )
Then I went to remove the chuck and to protect the lathe against the rain coming in here on Thursday.
Had little bit of a knowing of this lathe.
Firstly I've discovered that the hi-low gear on the spindle is someway locked in the high speed gear.
Cause engaging low the spindle just locks up stuck solid.
Id preferred not to disassemble the headstock but unfortunately I have to do it.
Then the lever I thought it was to engage the power feed is actually a belt tensioner for the change speed,it might work as a clutch as well.
A good thing I've discovered is that the power feed is both directions,so I can cut both right and left hand threads with this lathe.

After that I've applied a generous amount of spray grease on everything bare metal,all the gearings ,on the carriage,on the feed box , levers, ways, compound slide, the Face plate on the spindle,lead screws and all the ground surfaces.
This grease is very sticky and once the solvent evaporates it looks like cosmoline.
I've then covered the whole thing.
