Today I made SWMBO scream and not in a good way...

(First time for everything I suppose )

I had the dishwasher lent back and had to get underneath to refix the front panel. Asked her to steady it so it didn't come down on my head. The door has to to open, hinged down, to get the front panel on. As the whole thing was lent back the door closed at a fair rate of knots into the 4 fingers of her right hand.

Don't think anything's broken but tba.

Update: Norhing broken it would appear...fingers crossed.

I managed to break Alison's rh thumb 25 yrs ago .. looks like she's forgiven me as she's still here .

Actually it was her unfamiliarity with the mechanics & safety awareness of don't try to stop 36 x 2.5 mtr long 35 mm square steel tubes when they fall because you've not thought it through how to stack them safely.
Pleased to say she was wearing hard yellow chromed leather gloves at the time, or she'd be likely missing her thumb.

Todays Scrap Heap Challenge (& the "get some practice in - you need it!") has been to make this stand for my dinky cheapie anvil.....

...... that doubles as a Stand for my ancient cheapie Bench Grinder ......

I wanted a better way of clamping long bits of wood for planing the top (I currently use what I think is called a "Doe's Foot"), so I thought I'd have a go at a crude tail vice thing. Made out of a bunch of odds and ends I had lying around.

Underside:

The bars are 12 mm aluminium, the rods are 8 mm silver steel, the threaded bar is M8, the things that go in the dog holes are 20 mm 303 and the bits that are threaded & glued onto each end of the threaded bar are EN1A. The one of the left-hand end of the threaded bar has a reduced diameter bit on the end with a groove cut in it for the M4 grub screw - that makes the left-hand aluminium jaw retract as you undo the screw. The thing on the right-hand end of the threaded bar has a 5 mm hexagonal hole rotary broached into the end so it can be tightened/loosened with a (ball-end t-handle) hex key. The threaded bar is long enough to cover the spacing of my dog holes so that I should be able to clamp any length of wood (up to the length of my bench, obviously!).

I just tried it out on this bit of sweet chestnut and it worked a lot better than I expected, so I'm really pleased with it so far, especially given it only took me a couple of hours to make.

Perhaps Knurl the knob on the threaded rod and you'll be able to hand roll it almost tight, ready to Allen key it the remaining bit .

Though at school 50 or more years ago & on a C&G fine furniture making & renovation course we just used a single 2" square pop-up pine block set in the end of the carpentry work benches.
Apparently like that to get you to plane in a straight line parallel to the edge of the wood so you quickly get to flatness.

I wondered about that, but the bit that would be knurled is only ½ mm off the bench so it wouldn't be that easy to turn by hand. With the t-handled, ball-ended hex key, it's very fast to spin it round, much faster than I'd manage with a knurled thing.

I've got some home-made dogs with square ends that can be popped up to any required height & that's what I tended to use with the doe's foot thing. When there's a lot to take off & both sides are a long way from flat, I think it'll be nicer to have it a bit more rigid.

After 10 years of looking at this lot and thinking I should really do something about tidying it up, I've finally got round to it (or more accurately it finally got on my tits enough to do something about it).

So, a sheet of ply, a bit of pine furniture board salvaged years ago from an old wardrobe, a bit of swearing, and Ta Da.

Just needs the screw holes filling and a link of paint, but I hate painting, and I'm sure having taken 10 years to get this far, another few weeks won't hurt.
