Bit of fun the last few eekends.
A Nice RAF Fire rescue axe. In need of some TLC.
The pitting you seen is normal on theses, even new un opened units.
The ends were dressed on a water stone, they do not need to be razor sharp. As they need to ne sharp enough to hack at Alloy, plastic s and glass.
I like this shot as it shows how the sun catches the dressed edge.
All done.

A tidy bix, with years if dirt. But seized shut.
Gentle application of heat, from a soldering iron, on the hinges and the clasp. it took a few applications to ease the lid open. When the hinges and clasp were warm bees wax was allowed to seep into them.
The tyre pressure gauge was cleaned and tested, still with n manufactures tolerance.
0000 wire wool, with "Meths" cleans the French polish, with out removing the many layers.
New French polish was applied and a hard wax was applied.
All finished.

This hammer was a vey welcome donation. A MIS member has issues with his hands.
He is an active member, but with his hands issues we needed a set of tools he can use.
So what did we do.
We used some of the sand paper and wet n dry from the same donations. We try to use, save and make good all what we can.
The wood grain, age and damage led to a differant finish.
If you look at the handle, you can see the Modification we needed to make.
That chamfer sits in his hand and he can feel it, so he knows what end is going to be used.

This "Multi Tool" won me a case of beer.
I know the end is screwed in place and holds a set of tools. a know it member was set in his ways that it was all one peace off wood.
A hot water soaked off cut of leather n the end had it warm enough to unscrew it.
He was sent off to get my winnings.
It took a few coats of French polish to get a nice finish. The stain you see is deep and could not be removed.

I mentioned in another post about using a soldering iron to heat hinges.
This is the iron we used, before it was restored.
Theses flakes of paint can be painful if the dig into your skin.
The iron was tested and then given a PAT, to see if it works and is safe to use.
Metal work was cleaned.
A fine grain beech handle was exposed, we used a Cabinet scraper to remove the old finish and then Rattle can varnish was applied.

This was restored as a training item.
It was thought that to rsore this would be cstly, due to the cost of getting the correct paint finish.
Metal work was cleaned on a bench grinder wire wheel. The wood was cleaned with a shaped cabinet scraper. Made from a dead saw blaade.
Filler primer.
Black paint, in many thin layers and finally a clear coat of dark varnish.

A know it all said it was too far gone to save. Others had other ideas.
Yes, the top is broken, but they were back then so a old cast iron 3 legged pot could be used on them. Mainly during the two World wars.
It was easy to dismantle. The old wick is rotten and seized with rust.
Best way to remove a rotten and seized wick is to soak it in hot soapy water. This loosen it enough to tease it out. Take a lot of time and do not force it. As spares are costly.
Do not be tempted to use a rotten wick, it is not worth it.
Do not loose, as original replacements are EXTREMLY hard to locate.
Fresh from the de-rusting bucket.
A new wick.
Warm the metal up, then apply bees wax and Danish oil to get a nice finish.
Everything is original.

I have an ancient Iron inherited from my dad.
Don't know if it was made by B10 Electrics Ltd or BIO Electrics Ltd, but does have 1943 WD mark.

Fixed this old Kenwood Chef mixer that normally lives at Sue's French abode. Madam reported that it "smelt funny and was noisy" when being used. The funny smell turned out to be coming from a loose connection in the plug, so easily fixed. The noisy fault sounded like a dry bearing to me, so once I removed the cogged belt from the motor, it was clear the issue was in the gearbox. A lot of the grease packing looked a bit like candle wax, and sure enough the mincer, grain mill etc. front bevel gear's bearing was as 'dry as a dry thing'. cleaned out and repacked the gearbox, and it's now running nicely and ready to leave the country on madam's next sojourn...
