B it of fun yesterday, my friend and I had fun in the playpen.
This is their work.

This lumbers wrench was in average condition, some rust and in places the paint was flakinging into sharp splinters.

Attacked with a wire brush to remove the rust, flaking paint and key the surface.

You can see an issue with normal rattle can primer, it reacted with the original paint. Within 15 minutes the whole coat and rippled.
So we removed all the original paint and used a etch primmer.

Then a good metal paint.

A rusty, but well packed trenching spade was in need of TLC. The old handle was rusted in place.

By opening the back seam up a small amount allowed us to drive in a 3"/75mm wood screw and pull it out.

The start of tghe clean up. My friend was shocked on the power of the angle grinder and how fast the rust and cruds "Goes away!"

My friend has never used a rattle can, you can see.

But we got it right in the end.

A new shaft was fitted, now it lives with my friend.

Take a unloved Gentleman back saw, with tar/pitch on the handle.

Cleaned, french polished, and the teeth reset.

Take this saw, take some coffee and take some fun.

as it was early hours, no power tools.

Cabinet scraper, wire wool and elbow grease.

First of the 10 coats of french polish. The over coat was removed later. The teeth have been set as well.

I was pleased when this arrived in a recent donnation. No use for MIS etc.
But usefull for at work.


But it did not work!!!!!

I think I know why.

So.......

Out with the old and in with the new.

This really wa sin need of a lot of love and attention. My friend thought it was dead.

Disassembled. The saw dust has been mixed with resin and has set hard.

The whole lot was dumped into my Meths Vapour tank and left in a warm place. This speeds up the process.

Holes filled with hard wax, any worm was killed with 4 minutes in a mirco wave.

Start of the clean up.
Most of the rust was removed with 0000 wire wool.
Then a sheet of plate glass and 1000 grit grinding pate cleaned the rest.

I have had a fair few of theses piller drills come my way. Never had any real issues.
The weakest part I have found is the belt, nearly all have been over tightened, or not fitted right.

This one was in good condition, but the rust had got a hold.

I always replace any bolts and screws when I fix these up. They are always 4.8 grade and are not well formed.

Looks like my Nu-Tool one but a different colour, bought off someone for a tenner years ago. I’ve found the bit where the workpiece goes on is very slightly dipping to the front, square enough for most things, but annoying.

The Nu tools ones did just that. At one point you could contact them, they would send you a shim kit.

I think Nu-Tool went bust many moons ago. I had one of their SDS hammer drills that I bought years ago, it sat unused in the shed for yonks, then about the first time it was used in anger the gearbox stripped its teeth.

I've still got a Nu-Tool bench grinder I bought from B&Q years ago.
Just wait, the next time I use it that will fail as well.....
