I suppose MOT testers see a fair few Golfs - the rear discs on my Lancia should have shields - mine looked okay under 20 yrs of muck and brake dust, so I had them blasted and powdercoated in with a load of other stuff . . . they came back lovely and black . . . and lacey . . . they would have looked good suitably shaped and providing support to a lovely lady . .

So I left them off. I know others have failed inspections with holey ones fitted - but I reckon if they had took them off beforehand, the tester would have been none the wiser.

The ones on the rear of my 306 were rotten so I removed them & it has went through several MOT's since with no issue! Better off without them anyway, they cause the inside of the discs to corrode.

Did a simple repair to the much poorly repaired bench saw fence at the local Men's Shed making an 8 mm & 10 mm thick steel plate for the clamping screw . made a rough knurled hand tightening handle rather than make a small hand wheel which can easily be over tightened and prone to stripping threads . The alu plate, pop riveted on. is the same message, " Hand tighten only ". I did it like this as the marker pen writing will rub off all too easily .
Putting the nut on the screw thread , also drilling and tapping the nut and bolt thread with a 3 mm thread to fit a locking bolt through the main screw thread to prevent easy removal of the handle as there are some real hero's in the shed who would be able to wreck it without effort .

I have removed loads of them rarely are new ones fitted . Drum brake back plates are covered by the MOT. Disc shields call them what you want are not . If one was insecure and was likely to become trapped in the moving parts it would only be a advisory . With a dangerous against it . That is how stupid the rules are .

Today I fixed the base of the light that came with the Clarkson Grinder I recently collected from @Theblackbox

The base plate of the switch box had been damaged and a lump was missing.

Cast iron, so braze seems the obvious repair.

I've no thin cast iron so I cut a patch out of 3mm mild steel.

Used OA and brazed it in.

Then tided it up by grinding.

Job done.

I'll paint the box when I'm painting the white inside the shade and I've the right colour paint.
I don't intend to paint the rest, as the grinder is in great shape and doesn't need a full paint job.
(They are only original once)

Not really fixed but now sounds much better. Front and rear brake heat shields on the Golf were rattling. The fronts are easier than the rears as the rear hub has to come off. In the end I was able to rip both off in 5 minutes.

Putting new ones back on will be a bit more tedious, caliper and disc off at the front and everything including the hub off at the back.

Leave them off, lots of the 4x4 guys cut theirs off an don't fail MOT

As the weathers on the change next week best get the baler put to bed and ready for next year, had a few issues with a twine guide and a knotter, all sorted now so ran a few small loose bales through it to be sure and attached the goody box back on the side, well impressed I got it done and not left it until it was needed next year!

This tired Wilsco D141 came my way.

Oh I knew it needed much work.

The whole end cap is gone.
There is no point of fixing it, the boiler is scrap.

Getting to the fixing's is slow work.

Fitted, pressure tested and only one leak.

Yes I could of fitted the whole new grinder. But I stripped the new one down. Used the parts to repair the original.

New belts.

Post steam.

Dead boiler.

But a local Pongo Captain wanted me to fix it.


He paid for tank sealer, wick and wick holder.

Not cheep.

New wick. The replacement holder was wrong, but we used parts from one to make a good one.

In flame.

With a friend.




Now sold to Pongo for £250 pounds.

Dead tin plate table top oil lamp.
It was in a bad way.

Not worth time, effort or money, right?

Well it is British made.
From the time of WW2

100's were made.

They were cheep, they fell apart.

So we fixed it.

In paint.
The inside of the tank was cleaned using Citric acid. The 24 ball bearings and oil used to polish it.

New imperial wick.

It works.

Why spend time and stuff on it?

One reason.

The wick gear assembly is Bronze.

This dates it to at least 1940.
Not originally for the Russian, but the Home Fount.

I managed to get one very similar to that back from the USA some years ago, in the same number of component parts as it started in

I have had the stove since I was 18 - its been very well used, and needs some attention, and replacement o-rings to stop me going up with with it when it sends vapourised petrol every which way.

I have a couple of those, and an antique one of another make (can't recall right now) that has a tapered glass.
I swear I saw one many years ago that has (4) mantles, but have not seen one since.

Is it me, or have Coleman dual fuel stoves/alanterns etc vanished from US stores? I thought I'd buy a replacement stove, but I haven't found one in the last year and a half of visits.

They are getting harder to locate, the fuel is the issue.

Wasn't aware, just bought new ones on eBay.

For the rears I was thinking I may just take out the two brake carrier bolts and the hub bolt and see if I can lift the full assembly out of the way. That would save a lot of messing about with vag-com.

On my w220 mercs I have cut aftermarket brake guards in half and re welded in Situ. Saves having to buy rear wheel bearing kits and the pain of replacing them.

^ I'd considered doing similar when I discovered what a pain it is to do the rears on my Audi, but haven't got around to it yet. I thought rather than welding I'd perhaps just weld a couple of tags on and use small bolts of some sort, but I think the ones I bought aren't correct anyway so haven't looked at it again.

Rice cooker placed on top of hot hob...melted foot.

Replacement foot made. Should keep wife happy. She's only "cooked" three rice cookers so far.
