The bit the vice is gripping is what is left of the old bearing race.

And I punched the inner shaft out which was totally unharmed like new no vice touched it.

This Primus 210 stove came my way.

It had some fuel in it.

The Vaporizer had a few issues.
So a new jet and a good clean.

The tank just needed a clean up. The pump was serviced and then it was given a pressure test.

Cleaned up and warming up.



Even the tin cleaned up.

Brew time.

This evening I fixed the range rover upper and lower front arms both sides


totally knacked bush , off side wasn't as bad but soft ,well ball joints


this one just wobbled about !

all done both sides . started at half four 20 minute break for the rain and finished for about seven forty five , could of been quicker some of the nuts were feckers ! all done with sockets and spanners note to self buy a battery ugga dugga it'll be the next thing I buy

Not fixed as such but the milling machine went today, so Ive moved the lathe into its place to make more room down the side of the beast for bikes etc (still need to empty the radio shack)

Got rid of one of those plastic garden spider storage box things from outside the garage so the door will open properly to get a straight run out and in past the antenna mast

karcher k2 pressure washer i bought at auction (supposedly working fine, and £5) leaks from the pressure side. turns out there is a split in the pressure side outlet, which is kinda a win as it easy to replace, less so when you see the part cost...

GSXR carbs are the worst I've ever had to work on! They don't seem to be as good as the ones on Yamaha's for some reason.

There's a knack to it and they all like slightly different settings.

The carbs above looked very good inside but it wouldn't rev above 5000 RPM, customer had already tried a set of ignition coils and was sceptical it was carb related (fair enough I suppose).

A put full rebuild kits in and to be honest didn't find the smoking gun until looking at the slide needles and emulsion tubes.

The needles were worn and a had worn the emulsion tubes oval, over probably last 30 years?.

Been bitten too many times now so if a customer wants carbs sorting it always starts with a full new rebuild kit regardless.

That GSXR ended up around £550 all in, with new throttle cables, sounds a lot but it's all time really. Rush a carb job and you'll always get a poor result imho.

Only very recently perfected the art of recomissioning Honda Four carbs circa 1970's. None removable fuel needle seats but with enough patience you can bring them back.

A dying art.

All I'd say is don't be afraid to go out of what people and manuals class as "normal", especially with E5 fuel. Low speed, low throttle misfires are nearly always a too lean condition.

Ultrasonic cleaners aren't the be all and end all as well, probably 25% of my jobs go through the Ultrasonic cleaner.

I had a carbed R1 that hadn't been right from day one years back. Been all over for repair but still no better.

Stripped and rebuilt carbs, still not perfect, adjusted Pilot Air screws "out of range" and it ran great.

Didn't find out it had always been problematic until after the customer told me when they picked it up, would have been nice to know previous to repair..

My dad's GS850 had worn float needles and seats we drilled the seats out bigger so that the needle sealed on a fresh part of the cone and re-set the float heights, and it was good as new.

Just got one similar myself, really pleased with it although filthy and covered in all the usual detritus. Anyway its been cleaned and partly reassembled but I am in a slight quandary over the starter switch. It still has the original Startet switch, complete with asbestos insulation. Now would it be advisable to replace this with a modern switch, or can I use the original. It’s not going to be used in an industrial setting, nor is it likely to be left in the event of a power failure. Any help, advice or guidance gratefully accepted.

Got the same drill here, with the same starter, but the motor was too expensive to rewind and had to be scrapped. They were a batch of drills sent over on lend lease during WW2.

Marine problems again, early afternoon boat lost forwards / backwardsness.

Prop shaft had 'popped' out, to put a new cone on shaft, had to pop the gearbox off, found this, it's a drive plate or damper, goes onto flywheel.

This is impressive, it's not lasted 10 weeks, then client must have really hit something with the propellor.

Couple of hours later, all fixed.

Just a small repair today. I'm overhauling the steering gearbox of our 1953 Ford NAA tractor, and while I'm waiting for the new parts to arrive, I've started doing some repairs to the sheet metal, which actually consist mostly of fixing so-called "repairs" or improper maintenance by previous owners. For starters, one of the brackets that connect the dashboard section to one of the the hood sides was broken off and missing. So I fabricated a replacement bracket this afternoon from some 16-gauge cold-rolled steel by notching the corner, bending the sides up, welding the corner, and touching it up with a Dremel to make a similar radiused corner, then welding it onto the dashboard section, with one weld through a drilled hole and two additional welds. It's a pretty decent match, I think. I'll bead blast the entire surface of this and other sheet metal sections before priming/painting. The next sheet metal repair on the tractor will be more complicated (upcoming in a few days).

My mate's battered old SLK threw a rod on Friday night, so at the weekend I took him round some potential new cars, and he bought a very tatty, but rust free and apparently well maintained Celica for the princely sum of 1400 quid.

About 40 minutes after he bought it...

The clutch went, with zero warning (despite being clearly on its last legs when we finally got it unbuttoned).

Leaving him with two knackered cars, no money to replace or repair them, and needing to get to a new job on Monday.

So towed him back to my yard, loaned him the Hilux to get into work (advantage of WFH, I don't need-need a car) and agreed to take a day off Wednesday when the parts would arrive and do the Celica clutch as a favour...

Actually not that bad a job, but the parts didn't get dropped off untill about 11:30, and there's a couple of really awfully designed engine mounts that make disassembly and reassembly a right pig.

Took nearly 2 hours to get one particular engine mount off, and around an hour to re-fit it, which I'm shown doing here around midnight:

Anyway committing to doing it in a day resulted in a 3am finish, which was sub-optimal... The dawn light was pretty though!

It's a fair few years since I've last done a clutch replacement on the floor like this (the last time was Christmas Eve 2017, in the snow, out of pure necessity) and the first time I've done one without recourse to a workshop manual...

So despite the grueling way I went about it, I am pretty chuffed with how well it worked out all things considered.

Been there done that. gone to bed and gone to work next morning in the cad. I no longer try to touch my own cars. Nothing quite like swearing at something at 3AM and hearing the dawn chorus
